If you ignore the injuries to the bottom six and goaltending position and don't play putrid players like Chris Stewart (Shore was the much better acquisition), here is the roster:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Jankowski - Ferland
Stajan - Shore - Brouwer
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone
Smith
If that roster does not make the playoffs, it has underperformed. In my view, injuries cannot fully explain the underperformance.
The coaching staff has made some brutal decisions and I think these decisions explain the majority of the underperformance.
--It took them too long to put Dougie Hamilton and Matthew Tkachuk on PP1 while it floundered for large parts of the season.
--The coaches chose to ice Matt Bartkowski.
--I trust that the coaches will stop playing Stewart once Ferland and Versteeg return, but if they do not, that will be a decision as bad as playing Bartkowski.
--Employing mostly passive formations on the PK.
Treliving is responsible for both roster construction and coaching hires. My point is Treliving should feel the heat, but for his coaching hires, not his roster construction.

That bottom six is terrible. Tell me, which playoff contending team do you think has a worse bottom six?
And the D sucks. They are “performing” like they always do.

Plenty of "real playoff teams" would be okay with the 30-30 plus 1st line center. The Flames issues obviously lie further down the lineup

Ok yeah Has Mony done a thing tje last three games? You think he is a 1st line Centre?

^Some of this narrative is tiresome, some just mostly fake news.
Bartowski has played 14 games (sat 52).
I expect coach was looking for help at the deadline, and what he got from the GM was Stewart - so he played.

Whoever wins the vezina this year would not have put up better numbers than Smith did if he played in Calgary this year. To me, that is Vezina level goaltending. Smith has been ridiculous all year.

2.53 .921 not quite vezina caliber

It's Smith's home numbers that have floundered. Maybe because the team has too, but iirc Smith's home sv% is under 0.900

That same 'deployment' has resulted in best ever years for Gaudreau Monahan and Tkachuk.
I'm not saying don't fire Gulutzan, friend. I'm saying the bottom 6 forwards are not good enough to win.

If They were scoring a bunch we wouldn't be complaining about skill. Its about how to help them score. Not everyone is a superstar in their first game in the Nhl. They need a system to succeed in and develop.
Maybe the system here is not helping them?

IDK I watch a lot of hockey...at the start of the year the Flames were giving up ridiculous amounts of chances. Since about the midway point Calgary gives up some of the fewest high danger chances in the league...often a handful per game
I think Flames fans have seen so much bad goaltending that slightly above average really knocks our socks off. Smith's save percentage is 15th in the NHL...he wouldn't be getting a sniff at the vezina.
Then add Gillies, Lack, Rittich lol (you don't want to see those combined numbers) Overall the Flames goal tending has been average

As far as bottom 6 goes.
I believe Jankowski is/will develop into a very good nhl center.
I still have hope for Bennett. Some hope.
The system is obviously not helping Bennett.
Bennet is obviously not helping himself.
Vicious circle.
Everyone else are below replacement level players, imo.

I expect all day tomorrow on the fan will be the same thing. I bet the call in show was a gem too.
All day Loubo and Will's and literally the rest of the radio crew we're ready to start firing shots at the team if they lost tonight.
Line em up.

Bottom line, the team has complete confidence in Smith and aren’t focused on trying to avoid mistakes as opposed to trying to make plays, because he will more often then not veil them out.
When the team sees the backup get faked completely from a slight hesitation, and the the next game, see the other backup goalie get beaten cleanly for two crucial goals which swung momentum, the team confidence sinks, and the scramble to not give up any decent chances becomes the mindset of the team rather then the all out trying to get the goals back.
For the above three specifical goals mentioned, those would be standard Mike Smith and veteran NHL saves, which wouldn’t even be mentioned post game, or even in game, as some crucial or important save.
Instead, they go in and that sets the Flames back on the scoreboard, confidence wise, and momentum wise, and they aren’t used to worrying about the goalie behind them, which makes this situation unfamiliar.

Treliving rolled the dice there, and it's not looking good.

Where is it among goalies who have played top 10 minutes? Because that is all that really matters
Edit: will answer my own question. Among the top ten goalies in the league in minutes played, only Renne and Vassy have better have percentages (I consider within .001 a tie).
He trails Renne and Vassy by .006. He was also top three minutes played until he got hurt.
Stud. Absolute stud.

team scores 1 goal or less: lose.
fans look at lineup replete with 7 or 8 guys who don't score and never have: blame the coach.
Bottom 2 lines look almost nothing like they did to start the season: crickets
One of the lowest scoring teams in the league last year and added no scoring: fans think contender.
This team was so good at scoring goals they gifted a middle six roster spot to a 45 year old. Signed Tanner Glass off a PTO (Because hey, beats playing Lomberg).
Explain to me how this is a good team again? I really don't see it.
Treliving honeymoon over. Selling all your draft picks to scrape into 11th place is not a winning strategy.
Just imagine this season with a Gaudreau, Monahan or Tkachuk injury.
This is an embarrassing roster.

You're right and you're wrong.
You're right that Smith hasn't been Vezina caliber at home. Hence our brutal home record. You're wrong that Smith hasn't been vezina Caliber on the road. .944 road SV% will win you a lot of games that you shouldn't win.
