Just wondering? are you talking about Jack Hughes out of Florida? if so and if he was draft eligible this year I might take him over Dahlin. Yes, he's that good!

Especially the way he’s playing right now.

No, that Jack Hughes' brother, Quinn.

Assuming "a top 5 pick" doesn't include top 2 (as those are exponentially more valuable than the 5th pick in nearly all years) here's a quick, extremely rough look at recent top 3-5 picks:

Gudbranson<Hamilton
Johansen<Hamilton
Niederreiter<Hamilton

Huberdeau=Hamilton
Larsson<Hamilton
Strome<Hamilton

Galchenyuk<Hamilton
Reinhart<Hamilton
Reilly=Hamilton

Drouin<Hamilton
Jones>Hamilton
Lindholm<Hamilton

Draisaitl=Hamilton
Bennett<Hamilton
Dal Colle<Hamilon

Strome<Hamilton
Marner=Hamilton
Hanifin<Hamilton

Maybe give some advantage to the likes of Reilly and Hanifin as they are younger, while the jury's still out on the likes of Dylan Strome but for the most part the only player who's clearly better than Hamilton is Jones. More likely to end up with busts like Reinhart or Dal Colle or non-impact players like Bennett or Ryan Strome. A team in that 3-5 spot is likely rebuilding, so may value youth, but it's pretty obvious Hamilton is worth a "top 5 pick."

Wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that a delusional team like Edmonton who think they're better than they are would take the surefire, everyday NHLer in Hamilton over hoping an 18 will step into the lineup sooner than later.

If a team can trade for a young quality player like Hamilton with a pick outside top 3 in 1st round, i would pull tgat trigger all day and never draft another player in the 1st round again.

How is Jones clearly better than Hamilton? He's not remotely close in regards to scoring and is not a shutdown defensman. Hamilton has started his career with four straight double digit goal seasons at the age of 24 years old. That's pretty rare in this day and age.

last time a 5 pick was traded? 2007.

These picks don't get traded very often, and it's getting even more rare. I would think the ask to move a top 5 pick is a young controllable asset, like Dougie. So, I suppose it could happen, but I don't think it would.

What's interesting about this is that Boston wanted Arizona's pick, 2015 3rd overall, for Dougie and Arizona wouldn't do it. They wanted Strome.

Because Hanilton is incredibly underrated, not only here but by his own coach. How it took so long to make him the point man on PP1 is hard to wrap my head around. I’d bet he’d be looking at an outside shot of his first 60 point season if he had been. The guy is legit. Seth Jones is definitely a very good drfencemen, they’re comparable but to say he’s obviously better is a pretty big stretch.

Jones is definitely a step below Hamilton and the stats back that up.

I like Hamilton. Great dude, great shot. I’m not advocating trading him. But....

It is true he varies between not great and a tire fire defensively. He is bailed out by Gio regularly. His possession stats are inflated by playing with Gio. It would be nice if people at least acknowledged that for many good things he does, he has his share of weaknesses as well.

He strikes me a little like Dion Phaneuf....very good offence, issues in his own zone, but Hamilton is a better human and teammate.

Not looking to trade him, but I also accept he will likely never be a number 1 D.

Two things:

1) a #3 is worth significantly more than a #5

2) Arizona would take a do over in a heartbeat, I would think

Yes, top 5 picks rarely move. And IMO the reason is that they are over-valued. If we look at the list above, we see that only a couple of 3-5 overall picks have turned out comparable to Hamilton.

But a pick is sexy because it might even be a boat.

It reminds me of Brent Sutter, who "didn't know Kotalik had a big shot" when that was about all he was known for

One week before trade deadline, and I just read 3 pages of Brodie sucks and 2 pages of Hamiltons worth. That's off season material. Paging Dr. Sureloss , paging Dr. Sureloss , your needed to bring this thread back to current trade rumours.

What would it take for the Flames to trade for Erik Karlsson? Can we get a deal done if we add to Stone and our 2019 + 2020 first round picks?
