I think the team will take a big run at Kane in free agency but I doubt they will want to pay for the premium just to have him a few months early.

I’m all for moving Gillies. But reluctant to move valimaki/Andersson/Fox/Kylington/Dube/Parsons/Rittich

Young goalies are a flavour of the year, around here and in the league in general. Irving was can’t miss. Then Brossiot. Then Gillies. Now Gillies is expendable.
Rittich could be fine, he could also be the next Henrik Karlsson in the Fall or next season.
There is so many factors that any young player needs to get right to progress in the league and with goalies you obviously have a harder challenge because there is only two per team, not 7 defenceman or 12 forwards playing each night, getting better and showing coaches, scouts management of your team and other teams as to what you can do.
Our own astute GM has looked the seasoned vet route and proven NHL goalies are less of a risk for day to day performance then trying to project young goalies the same way you’d plot progression of young forward, for example.
If that’s the price the Flames have to pay with less other assets, then no issue with anyone in the system.
The Flames need depth for a run, and that’s assuming no injuries and assuming Versteeg is back soonish. Even if Jagr finds his health and confidence there needs to be more forward depth.
How much does Ottawa want to part with Karlsson’s contract for the next year? Would swapping Brodie out and risking loosing Karlsson after next year, so basically a year rental for Brodie? Normally not want to change out anything with our very stable defensive situation right now, as that is the least of the Flames potential issues, no matter what the stats on Brodie say, but if you could get Karlsson and maybe have to take Karlsson as part of a deal for the winger you want, it would be a significant upgrade, and also Treliving putting a lot of cards on the table for this year and maybe next...
Basically, E Karlsson + Stone (or Hoffman) for Brodie, Gillies (or Parsons or Rittich) + what else? Roster player? More prospects? I guess depends on how much Ottawa wants to get out from under certain contracts. Also assume the Flames get a draft pick if Karlsson doesn’t sign here after next year.

Does Gillies have any significant trade value? He is not really in the upper echelon of the AHL stats wise (#14 in save pct of AHL Qualified goalies) .915. This is up from #22 last year when he had a .910 sv %.
If someone is willing to deal for a goalie the 25 year old Riitch would have a lot more interest from any trading partner than the 24 year old Gillies.... But do the Flames see Gillies as the #1 guy in 2 years?

I feel the same way. So many people seem fixated that getting a scoring winger will solve the teams offensive issues. IMO the solution is on the backend. We can all agree that we have 6 good PMD that aren't being utilized correctly. Yes the GAA is down. But at the expense of almost all the offence from the D.
How is bringing in a winger who plays 16 mins a night going to change that? What about the remaining 44+ minutes?
I could easily see the Flames paying the price and then the result is another Duchene. Or one of the many 'panic' trades that don't pan out.
Having said that I wouldn't be opposed to a trade for a fair price. It also could pan out. But I would not want an overpayment.

I never bought the 'where there's smoke there's fire' mentality. Possibility, yes, but Tre likes to talk quietly in corners, as well.
I brought up Carolina, because Ward is off the books next year and they are tied to Darling, with nothing else coming up.
They do have a huge surplus of left handed D. If we wanted to move Brodie at some point, it might make sense to go to the hurricanes with Gilles.
That would make a Brodie for Stone Hoffman much more palatable, would it not?

By potentially bolstering the powerplay (which would be huge in and of itself) as well as adding a scoring element to the 3rd line.
There's a reason it's one of our most glaring needs right now.
100% agree about not over-paying... but it's definitely an area of need at the moment.

Love those prospects, but if Stone gets moved for that mystery grab bag, Ottawa has some serious issues. Ottawa also would not be adding to Stone.

I did some digging on Carolina.Their top goalie prospect is Alex Nedjilkovich (spelling?) He's rocking a 2.99 gaa and a .897 sv% in 31 gp. Gillies on the other hand is rocking a .915 and 2.64 gaa in 29 gp. Their guy is two years younger than Gillies but it looks like Gillies has put up better numbers across the board in previous years.
I don't know if Gillies is such a marked improvement over their top guy to reel in a scoring winger off their roster.
But it may buy a player like Valntin Zykov who is having a good season on the farm team. Already has bested his previous seasons points totals in 24 less games played, and has scored 23 goals this year alone instead of last seasons 16. So he is progressing nicely. Stocky RH/RW who seems poised to break into the NHL.
Tricky thing is, Carolina also has a RW depth issue. So they may not favor that kind of swap. But Ndjelkovich or whatever is about their only decent goaltending prospect so who knows.

The trajectory of Bennett, or lack thereof, has been the biggest disappointment of the rebuild.
We are SO frigin lucky that the lack of development of the highest draft pick in franchise history has been offset by one of the biggest draft steals in Gaudreau.
Can you imagine the flames rebuild (ie. first round pick assets coming out of the bottoming out phase of the rebuild) being Baertchi, Jankowski, Monahan, Poirier, klimchuk, bennett.

Still a better overall track record than Edmonton, especially given draft positions over recent years! Four of those guys are surefire NHL'ers!

Why can't CP just be more patient with Bennett? The coaches refuse to put him in positions to grow his confidence, they've put Brouwer on that line that just sewers his production but calling his lack of development a disappointment is fair but I think it's more representative of the coaching staffs failure to properly manage personnel and lines and force Bennett at centre for so long. Try him at right wing FFS

Well if it's for a goalie prospect, it likely isn't going to be in package for Pacioretty.
But I guess he is wrong wing anyway

You never know. Price has a recent history of injuries and Montreal has a recent history of not wanting to pay big contracts.

They've played him at centre and at wing. He's played three lines at various times, with Gaudreau, Jagr, Backlund, Jankowski. He's played on the power play, penalty kill and with pretty sheltered minutes this year. Brouwer replaced Hathaway on that line. It's not exactly a huge difference.
What is the "position to grow his confidence" you are looking for?

I would offer Bennett+Gillies+Fox for Mark Stone.
