While it might sound good to say that off the cuff, I sincerely doubt you're qualified to run an optional skate.

14/15 was one of my all time favourite seasons as a Flames Fan.
Aside from obvious years with more playoff success, I cannot recall a season where I enjoyed watching hockey as much.
Irrespective of other flaws Hartley may have had as a coach, I thank him greatly for that.

Good interview with Sarich. I usually skip over his intermission bits, but I'll probably tune in now that I've heard him speak. Always love hearing some behind the scenes stuff.

Sarich is a professional and part of that responsibility involves not showing up to work drunk or with alcohol in your system. You don't know when someone might fall down the stairs or be in a last minute situation where they can't play and the guy who is a scratch might need to enter the line up. Maybe you've been a scratch for 11 games, but you're still expected to be ready to go a moment's notice.
|
Good god. Sarich said he wasn’t playing, had been scratched for several games, so he went golfing, had a couple of beers, nothing crazy, then got the call after the golf that night that he was playing the next day.

OK, then build us an arena. I'm sure you can find that kind of chump change under your sofa cushions.

I don't think Engelland reversed the puck once during the Bob era, lol

No...if you listen to players that played in that era the "old school" way of handling things was going out for drinks the night before every game

Mine, in order, 88-89, 03-04, the 86 POs, their first year in Calgary and the pretty good POs that year, then the Hartley run.

When you have two hall of fame centers (Sakic and Forsberg), two hall of fame defensemen (Blake and Bourque), a hall of fame goaltender (Roy), as well as really good depth pieces (Foote, Drury, Tanguay, Hejduk) all of whom are pulling for an inspirational story of getting Ray Bourque a cup.

Ahhh his sister Pam works in a shop, she never stops, she's a go getter.
Yeah, I agree, it was certainly a stacked team, but it wasn't exactly an easy road especially in the finals where the had to play the defending SC champs in the Devils. They were down 3 games to 2 in that series if I recall correctly and came back.
Back to the Hartley bash, are you happy Bob ran Sven to Vancouver? Every Canucks fan I know seems to like what Baertschi brings, how bout Mean Mr. Mustard?

I'm okay with Baertschi, he has been a good player for the Canucks, a small second line winger who is reasonably defensively responsible and can score around 40 points a year. He isn't a top line player but I think that on a good team he can be a contributing member. Seems to gel well with Horvat as well.
The cost of acquisition was reasonably low as well and while Anderson may turn out to be a better player (who really knows for certain), I think that both teams and the player are likely happy with the end result of the trade.

I love hearing Sarich talk about the game, and I also find he brings out the best in Rhett. When Sarich is on Warrener drops his dumb guy schtick a bit and gets excited about sharing stories. The two of them make a great on-air pair.

Pfffffft. Suspended? Even a airline pilot would be allowed to fly a plane in this case.
NHL players don’t need to be ready to go at a moments notice, the schedule comes out in the summer. Pretty sure they know when games are.

Yes? And if a pilot was golfing one day, had some beers and had a flight the next evening, they would be allowed to fly making CaramonLS' suggestion that he be suspended completely ridiculous.

While it is not possible to put you in charge of that team to find out whether you could have coached it to the Cup, there is still a way to legitimately compare your coaching skills to Hartley's. Hartley has started as a coach by coaching a junior team from his hometown to a championship while working full time as an assembly line worker. So go ahead and sign up to whatever junior or at least beer league team is looking for a coach, and try to coach them to whatever title they are competing for.

Pilots are paid to perform a certain task. As long, as they are able to do it safely, it is more or less tolerable to take a drink. It is also OK for pilots to eat whatever fast food they please.
Players are paid not just to perform, but to outperform opposition, who are presumably not drunk and at their best possible shape. Hence it is reasonable to demand them to not let alcohol and junk food to decrease their performance level.

I'm right there with you. 13/14 is actually the year I got back into hockey. That team was horrible but so fun to watch. Then 14/15 was a blast.
I do think Hartley got the team as far as he ever would, and am glad they moved on, but I still appreciate his time here for making watching the Flames fun again for me
