The Mayor is going to be taking calls on the CBC over the lunch hour. I wouldn't be surprised if this topic comes up.

Comes up right at the start...and Nenshi says that in addition to the online threats of harassment, violence and misplaced public/social media outings (taking their pictures and stating they are pedophiles...) that there was a BOMB THREAT.
Yes, the way to get your point across about how nudity is bad and you want to protect the children is to threaten to blow up hundreds of people...
The Edmonton mayor has said that their nudist group has invited ours up, and there wont' be any problems...now THAT is embarassing...

I was at a couple onsen's in Japan this past spring. The tattoos thing is overblown.
It's really there to keep the Yakuza out, and they are most readily recognized by their tattoos.

And Japan is not viewed as overly progressive either. Calgary's over-conservative social values, just embarrassed us.
What a bunch of squares.

Man the thought of a changing room full of well-worn sweatpants and dress shoes kind of make me lose my appetite for lunch.

IMO I would classify it as the same category as Swatting.

If they were worried about security- why not just strip search everybody going? One place that I don't think there would be any objections.

And in Toronto a 11 year old Muslim girl was attacked by a grown man with scissors who attempted to cut off her hijab.
Just saying it isn’t a Calgary thing.

Naked swimming event coming to Calgary wave pool
@AnnaliseAK: Mayor Nenshi is on @AlbertaatNoon today. First time he's waded into nude swim saga. Says: "This is actually a very serious issue" and he's disappointed. Says there was a bomb threat, threats of baseball bats to car windows. Decision to cancel is about safety not nudity. #yyccc

Listen carefully and you can hear the snickering in Paris, London, Athens and Rome — even Toronto.
We’re now the city known across Canada, and, given how fast news travels on the Internet, around the world, as uptight and puritanical.

Even the Sun's editorials calling Calgary "Canada's Backwater."
The funny thing is, from the time this gained media attention on January 5, 2018 to the time it was shut down on January 10, 2018, a 7 hour drive away Kelowna held a naked swim at the recreation open to all-ages on January 8, 2018.
Also ironic in that there were two prominent Calgary petitions being held at the same time. One succeeded, if only because of vague threats, to shut down an event due to the event of made up child abusers. While, the other, about getting an actual real life convicted child abuser expelled from the University of Calgary failed.

Meh, the Stampede has had countless threats, bomb threats, machine gun threats, threats of violence from all sort of 'activists' and crazies - not to mention actual violence including deaths - in recent years and it was never cancelled.
There hasn't been a Pride parade in Canada that hasn't had to deal with hate speech from the fringes.
It's a useful out, but that's all it is. Setting a precedent that all it takes is some anonymous user to post a threat on a message board to get what they want is a pretty scary idea.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
I'm not sure all these people understand
It's not like years ago
The fear of getting caught
Of recklessness and water
They cannot see me naked
These things, they go away
Replaced by everyday

I'll reiterate - this is so goddamn embarrassing for our city.
The paper bag emoticon is so appropriate right now.

Nenshi covered this, too. Said that they didn't have enough time to properly assess and deploy against the threats, as this came up so fast. Said much the same thing, that things like the Pride Parade are known about and known when they'll happen so that planning can already take place.

The greatest threat to children swimming nude turned out not to be pedophiles but instead the people trying to protect the children.
That's 2018 in a nutshell.

I'm not up to speed on this but did the City actually put the kibosh on this? How can that be? Private function in a private venue, no laws being broken that I'm aware of.
