I can only repeat sentiments already shared... Either the City is allowing keyboard warriors to trump lawful citizens, or there has been a legitimate threat which should absolutely be investigated and prosecuted.

Disappointing. Live and let live.
Isnt this all because Adam and Eve ate an apple and then God told them to cover up their private parts? And nudity has been shameful and possibly a sin ever since?
And remember too that it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. At least thats what the sign at the protest said. Stay righteous friends or be damned for eternity.

It's too bad it was cancelled, but hardly surprising. The combination of having minors in attendance and being open to the public at a public facility was never going to sit well with a lot of people. If they had either kept it a closed event, or made it 18+, I have no doubt it would still be going on.

I'm still not clear on how the publicity came about. I heard an interview on CBC the other day, and the organizer seemed to be promoting the event and encouraging new people to attend. I assumed it was a publicity ploy on the part of the nudists, who are having a lot of trouble getting people to participate in their events these days. The average age of nudist club members in North America is something like 55, and organizations have resorted to offering discounts or free membership to people under 40.

And again, I am not referencing anyone in this thread, specifically. This is more against the generalized backlash than the "OMG! dino7c specifically shut this event down!" that you seem to think I'm saying.

I'm not sure wtf a pearl clutcher is, but people who zealously tried to have the event shut down with threats and petitions are ####ing morons so I guess we agree there. Again, no one in this thread advocated for the event being shut down though so don't paint them with that brush.
And again, I am not speaking about the people engaged in civil discussion (which, to be absolutely clear here, so maybe you can put this to rest, involves everyone in this thread) about this matter. Pearl clutcher is basically a term for someone over-reacting to something to which they are opposed in some manner. Generally the thing to which they are opposed does not even affect them in any way. A good example given elsewhere in this thread were the pearl clutchers upset when Calgary was going to have Marilyn Manson perform. Or those sorts who think that video games are the gateway to Hell and are going to corrupt our youth.

You can have a nuanced opinion and not be a radical. I'm of European descent and nudity hasn't been taboo for me or my family. Visited many a beach with optional clothing. I play men's league and probably am around 15 naked adults weekly and I have no problem with it. Heck, you want to have a get together and hang out with your bros and have your schlongs out, I don't care. I raise an eyebrow when people want to actively hang out naked around naked children. If that equals pearl clutcher, well then there you go.
I would raise a brow at someone who wanted to be nude ACTIVELY around children, too. However, being nude at an event that children may INCIDENTALLY to be at wouldn't bother me.

You are not a pearl clutcher if you think this event is not for you or your children. You are Helen Lovejoy if you try or think it should be shut down because you disagree with it without providing evidence that this is negligent behaviour by parents. And for the most part I think people have been critical of those who think that the state should intervene to make it 18 plus or cancel it.

EDIT: Didn't realize this was cancelled. I had two more Majora's Mask clips to use too.

Shutting this down was dumb and I'm sad the city did that. Pathetic stuff.

Are they? I know very little about the movement but some googling found me this.

You note in your book there are more nudist camps now than ever before. That really surprised me.

Nudism cleaned itself up and became about cruise ships and spa-like resorts where you could have a sauna or a massage. Older camps that were rustic and about nature started to go out of business as high-class nudist resorts were established.
There's articles like this that indicate that membership is dropping:

http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/356531

Yet other articles like this stating that it's increasing:

http://observer.com/2015/07/naked-in...ng-it-all-off/

It seems to me that the decline in membership in the largely retirement activity based AANR is being made up by young people doing things young people like to do. But naked.

I'd like to hear Nenshi's take on all this. The only comments I've found from City Hall are from Farkas.

An ex-Councillor chimed in on CNR's page. Here's what Pincott had to say: "Great! glad to see you guys worked it out. And, this was a terrible decision by the City to cancel it. You are baring (PI) the brunt of public intolerance, unwillingness to understand, and shaming puratinism. I’m sorry you have had such a ####ty week, you should have ended the month of work with a ton of naked fun!"

I'd be interested in the current Council's thoughts too. This is an interesting case, with some pretty ugly threats made against attendee's. I understand not being able to assure folks safety, but now wonder what sort of precedent is/has been set.

I imagine most Councillors are just trying to find out how to get refund on their tickets before they comment.

I don't know why but I found this hilarious.

"How come none of these good-looking young people want to hang around us naked old dudes?"

"One of life's great mysteries, Fred. Perhaps we'll never know."

"Should we offer them a discount?"

"Ah yes! Tremendous idea. I'm sure the issue is a lack of disposable income."

It’s a dangerous precedent in my opinion. What this will show people is that if you raise enough of a fuss and make vague threats, the city will roll over and capitulate. Even if your main arguments are utter nonsense.

It would have been interesting to see what council’s course of action would have been if this was an LGBTQ event that got the same response. I’d be willing to bet it would have gone ahead with a police presence

Might be hard for some of you to believe but I am disappointed it went down like this...as I stated before the combination of being open to the public and not being 18+ was asking for trouble. I think the group will keep future events closer to the vest...or, well closer to whatever.

Flame away...

Having not heard the comments from Farkas, but the City offered to allow this group a private nude swim at one of their facilities. After circumstances changed, the City changed their promise and cancelled the event. I can only imagine that Farkas' position is to create for this group an entirely new facility at the cost of millions of tax payers money. That's been his stance before.

It's not like it's a new concept. Japanese 'onsens' are public spas where it's a requirement to be nude, even for kids, and no one gives a flying crap. These things have been around for centuries, too, without controversy like this.
