Which makes you wonder, is it systemic? how is it, that for decades, this franchise has continued to wallow in the depths of mediocrity with a seemingly aura of entitlement?
Having said that, I'm glad to see some emotion from GG. Now if he'd only follow through and hold the players accountable during games. Regardless of how players are playing, he seems dead set on his player usage.
Good win last night though. Good to see all the guys playing with some passion, not just one or two of the usual guys. This is what's so frustrating about this team, I know they're capable of so much more than they give us on a regular basis.

Just so I understand.

I have been reading on these very boards how mind-numbing, passionless, foot-looking etc etc the coach is, and a big reason he should become unemployed. Right?

So the coach being asked to show more passion and do something to appease this same group....does so. In fact more than most would assume he would and certainly something that should give this same unaware group some satisfaction....and he gets a gas and match sandwich for that as well?

Sounds completely rational.

Oh please Gary.

Disappointed you had to resort to showing kids and parents this to get a reaction.

I'm all for yelling at the players from time to time, but that was a sign of a guy at the end of his rope. I'd have a lot more confidence in a guy who did that in the first week rather than a guy who has been with the team for ages without showing signs of rage. The fact it reached that point shows that the problems with the team are beyond his skill set.

Eric Duhatschek had no doubt at all it was calculated and staged by GG. Right down to his talking points in the subsequent media scrum. A coach strategically playing a motivation card. And I'm in the camp that saw a guy behaving in a completely unnatural way. That was the furthest thing from a spontaneous act of genuine anger.

Does this discussion have a camp of "I don't really care about Gulutzans temper tantrums because it has nothing to do with why I dislike him as a coach and generally I don't see this stuff as very relevant in the big picture?" Because I'm in that camp.

Spoiler!

I shouldnt have posted it like that. Especially the drink much comment. But the blanket statements getting thrown around are getting a bit much, there are a lot of other reasons people were looking for a change other then wanting more emotion from GG.

And thanks for letting me knowing Im not a Mod. Nice touch.

Also can you explain what 'That Group' is that I am apparently part of?

I think it's calculated too, and it's good. They need to get on a run here so this seems like a proactive measure to not let complacency creep into the group.

Flames players react. LINK

Doesn't sound like they took it overly seriously.

Quote:
Forward Matthew Tkachuk said if he was an Olympic judge he would’ve scored the toss a perfect 10 out of 10.
Quote:
Added captain Mark Giordano: “The intensity was right up there, 10 out of 10, but technique not so great.”
Quote:
I think it was effective,” veteran centre Matt Stajan said with a chuckle. “If I’m going to score the toss, I mean he got it all the way to the [private] box so I think the message was sent. He’s right. We’ve got to bear down here. These are big games and we got the message.

Since the meta has only gotten more meta, I'm going to focus on my takeaway from this video.

I'm certainly in the camp that has criticized Gulutzan's overuse of underperforming veterans. And Gulutzan has yet to let up on this, seeing as how Brouwer found himself on the second line against the Kings. But one encouraging sign I heard in this video is Gulutzan calling out his veterans specifically with the "one good game" line. What this shows is that Gulutzan isn't blind to the fact that his vets are playing like crap this season. Sure he's still playing them too much, perhaps in a (stubborn?) attempt to shake them out of their rut, but at least he's aware that his vets aren't helping him this season.

To read into this a little more, I find it interesting that this outburst comes on the heels of the Jankowski line finding it's stride and now the Mangiapane call up demonstrating to the coaching staff that there are guys in the AHL who can not only compete on the same level as these struggling vets, but outperform them. I bet Gulutzan was in disbelief that the vets weren't giving it their all in practice given how successful the call ups have been. I think he's realizing his loyalties and respect were misplaced, and that he'll be judged as a coach only on results -- not on how well he handled his vets.

But it remains to be seen if he can change tact mid-season. I've questioned Gulutzan's ability to adapt. Giving vets more leash than they've earned may just be "how it's done" in his mind. Even if it has only cost him as a coach.

Maybe it's just me but while Tkachuk looked serious in the interview, I'm surprised to see both Stajan and Gio laughing about being yelled at by their head coach moments after the practice ended. Probably nothing but still discouraging to see.
