Wow. If you ever want to see an instructional video, illustrating the "people see what they want to see" concept, just read this thread (for people on both sides of the argument).
No matter where you stand on the coach, it was simply a practice. They weren't practicing well, and he laid into them. Whether spontaneous or staged, it's simply part of the time-honoured dance that coaches and players have been swaying to, in every sport, since teams sports have existed.
It doesn't make him a better coach, nor does it make him a worse coach. It was simply another day in the life of a professional sports team (though admittedly, a more colourful day than some others). He was just doing his job. And good on him for it - everyone loves a good coach-tirade!
But anyone making any kind of definitive judgement, to support their own, on-going narrative on the subject, is simply fooling themselves.
Anyway... I do hope this helps elevate their compete level for tomorrow night though, because we really need to beat the Ducks.

Yes, they have gotten to where they are because they are the very best at what they do. And the margin of separation between them is, indeed, razor thin.
However, the margin between winning and losing at the highest level is also razor thin. And that tiny marginal difference between coaches can mean the difference between success and also-ran.
It is why they make the big bucks. And it is why only a very select few have longevity.

It sounds to me like he said “Captains” before the bit about veterans and “one good game.”
I don’t think it’s a reach to suggest this tirade was aimed at Brouwer, who is a Captain and has literally had one good game this year, which just happened to be last night.
Was he clowning around during drills or something? Was GG like, “wtf this guy’s wearing an A while sucking for 2 years and I when stick him on the second line to fill a hole, he finally shows up and then starts fornicating the canine the very next day in practice when we’re 4pts out of the playoffs at mid-season?”
Cause just imagining that makes me want to get in the car and drive to a sports store to buy a $150 hockey stick just so I can throw it, so I’m pretty on board with GG’s message here.

I'm a bigger fan of the stick-break. Sends the message and doesn't look quite as childish. A smash against the boards can work as well. More loud and less likely to accidentally look hilarious (which this almost does).
I'm thinking if he was near a net it would have been over the cross bear which would have been cooler.
As for Brouwer, I don't think the tirade was aimed at him, but he got an honorable mention as one-good-game Troy.

Also, process of elimination: every vet on this team has had multiple good games this year except for Brouwer (one good game) and Stajan (zero good games), so quite literally the only player that fits the comment is Brouwer.

Maybe we shouldn't take him so literally word for word in an emotional tirade.
If he were indeed referring to Brouwer, why wouldn't he just yell at Brouwer?
It seemed to me that he was talking to the whole team. And in my experience, when coaches yell at the whole team, they usually focus on the vets (presumably because the vets can take it, and they should know better)

Planned or not I don't care. I think the timing is perfect as you only have a few effective tirades a season as a head coach before the effectiveness is reduced and you don't want to use it too early or too late and this is the right time in the middle of the season where the team really needs to get going if they want to make the playoffs.

Brouwer and Stajan have each had more than one good game. Now, Brouwer is coming off a good game, so that description works.
And you don't just yell at one player. They dislike being singled out. It rubs other players the wrong way.

Unless the other players agree. Actually laziness is one thing that's good to call out in front of the team, because the ones that are working hard are pissed about it too.
Again, I think he was just an honorable mention in the overall rant.

Late to the party...
Good. I'm glad he did it. This team has been playing better and need to continue to do so. I too would be pretty pissed that the team has played so well for the past few games and could have been doing so when the beginning of the season happened. This team is wildly inconsistent, I hope this is a wake up call for them. I don't see GG yelling on a daily basis, so this should definitely stay fresh in their minds.

I kind of wish the stick made it the extra 7 or 8 feet into the second deck. That little extra would have made this live on for decades on sports highlight shows.

The video could not be released without the Flames consent . This was released for the purpose of convincing the Calgary Flame fan base that is growing impatient with "Gully" that see Gully can be the hard ass coach needed and not the incompetent staring at a monitor at his feet Muppet that a lot of fans have seen behind the bench. Fans have heard Gully has little words with the team in the locker room even after games and that isn't hearsay. That is (From his own lips).
This came across as a guy who knows he is under the axe and he knows it.
I am sure a number of the players laughed in private at the whole awkward incident.

Well that is certainly quite the take......
Inaccurate methinks, but quite the take anyway. The Flames can control if cameras are allowed in the Dome, but once they are ---- what they record is off limits. You don't want it recorded, don't do it in public. Given that this was in public, I suspect that GG didn't care if it was recorded (and might have liked it).
