I dont know if you can draw a conclusion based on the result of the next game, just how its played.

Lets be honest, Hartley made no excuses for demanding diligence and effort in practice. You play like you practice and if you phone in practice you are not going to succeed in play.

And again, one of this team's biggest issue has been being unprepared to play.

Having someone willing to throw a stick because you're not ready to go? I'm on board.

Got another Pat Burns story here.

The Leafs had won the first 3 out of a 4 game homestand just before the all star break and so were lollygagging around in practice. Harry Sinden, GM at the time, went up to Burns and said "Ya think you're in the clear, Burnsie? You and all the rest of these lazy punks, you're all in vacation mode already."

Burns immediately went down to the locker room, cursed at the top of his lungs, snapped some sticks and kicked garbage cans. The Leafs had one of their best games of the season afterwards. I'm hoping something similar happens tomorrow night.

Maybe GG is taking the loss of Freddie harder than Dougie?

That's why he was waived. GG slid off the road Christmas Eve and Freddie didn't come get him.

I heard about that and wondered if it was near my house. I could have helped dig him out, give him my thoughts on the season, etc.

He was on his way to Fishing Lake Sask. I suspect it'd be quite a hike for you.

so if we rewrite this story for the flames... it would be something like this?

The Flames had won their last 2 game at home against two very good teams and so were lollygagging around in practice. Brad Trolliving, GM at the time, went up to Gulutzan and said "Ya think you're in the clear, Gluey? You and all the rest of these lazy punks, you're all in vacation mode already."

Gulutzan immediately went down to the ice, cursed at the top of his lungs, threw his stick into the stands and a few vets under the bus. The Flames tuned him out and had one of their worst games of the season afterwards. Gulutzan was fired immediately after the game, with Dave Cameron to serve as interim head coach.

Like this emotion, but would love it even more if the “veterans” also got to eat popcorn for a couple games. I don’t care how much they make.

We are not far from the point in the season where GG played good cop bad cop by himself after the loss to Montreal, and it worked then.

Of course there's going to be some speculation that criticizes the coach or suggests he may be losing the room, it isn't fair to single that out with a drive by like those posters are stupid and were just looking for a reason to bitch.

Like Cecil, I'm actually surprised there hasn't been more of that in this thread.

See, that's the thing. There haven't been any rumors (that I'm aware of). It's only been made up speculation which amounts to the hopes and dreams of many hardcore fans.

If the argument is: "We're a group of irrational fans who are reactionary and shouldn't be held to high standards of reason, logic or evidence. It's just sports so let us vent," then I'm down. But you can't have it both ways. If you are a poster who is prone to saying things like: "look at his shoulders, he's lost the room," then you've lost the ability to be taken seriously when arguing that he should be fired. Which by the way, is an argument that can be made without making things up.

I'm seeing quite a few posters try to have it both ways here under the cover of a perceived majority. Don't see anything wrong with calling them out or a harmless joke.

Anyone else sick of the meta discussion of "it's ok / not ok to criticize / praise the team / coach"? Can we all get on the same page that this is a forum and this is what it's for? If you can't handle opinions you don't agree with then maybe a forum isn't for you.

Now cue the meta comment about my meta comment about meta comments.

I wish someone had looked at Gulutzan and said "Playing the 4th ####ing line late in the ####ing hockey game, and you're ####ing ragging on this ####ing group of ####s?" Then for added emphasis proceed to throw his stick into the upper deck.

By the same measure, most coaches also probably receive too much credit when teams do well. Not that they are dispensable or unimportant, but I tend to think that by and large guys coaching at the NHL level have gotten there because they know a hell of a lot about what they are doing. The margin of separation between coaches is razor thin.

I know they have won 2 big games, but this would still be the perfect time to try to snap the team out of a bad pattern that has repeated four times over the last 20 games.

First 20 games 12-8-0

Next 20 games 8-8-4, but also four repetitive cycles of 2-2-1. First lose 2 or 3 (one loser point), then win 2. And more or less repeat.

Next 5 games vs Ana, @ Min, @ TB, @Fla (BTB game), @Car. It's not hard to imagine a loss to Ana followed by a 2-1-1 road trip. The first 2 games (Ana and Min) are the most important by far.

Need to win next game and make the next 5 games go 4-1-0 or 3-1-1 and especially get 3 or 4 points in the next 2 games. But right away you see another sloppy practice as a bad sign and the pattern continuing.

I would throw a stick 12 rows and launch some F-bombs if it got everyone's attention so that they commit themselves to snap out of this pattern and win the next 2 games.
