As a UFA after July 1, he may get more and likely will. But I disagree as do many others, $5.5-$6m/ season is what a perennial 45-55 pt guy is worth right now in the NHL. Remember, he’s only broken 20 goals twice in his career, and is behind on his pace over the last 2 years in a contract year. I love Backs too but let’s get real here on what he is worth league wide, not to a few Flames fans.
That's a complete undersell job of what Backlund actually does for this team and you know it.
I think both the Kings and Ducks are good largely because of their tending and D. Getzlaf and Perry are great players, but the reason they are able to withstand injuries is because of the terrific blueline they've assembled.
But I do think there is more than one way to build a team. You just gotta pick your approach and execute it well.
That may be part of it... but then again, they suffered a bunch of injuries on their blue line as well.
There are 3 players on that team that managed to stay healthy all season thus far (41 games played).
Fowler and Lindholm missed 10+ games each. Manson has been healthy (and is great), with Montour only missing 2 games so far. Bieksa and Beauchemin have the 3rd and 4th most games played on D for that club.
It is a testament I think to the coaching of that team to be able to insert guys throughout that lineup and keep their heads above water. It is especially impressive considering who exactly they have lost this season so far (defencemen, #1 center, #2 center, etc.)
Compare that with Calgary who have been really healthy. 4 out of the top 5 D have played all 39 games. 9 players have played all 39 games. Ferland missed a game, Tkachuk missed two with that suspension, Frolik has now missed two, Hamonic has missed four. Most of the games missed were guys rotating in and out of the lineup, with the exception of Frolik now, and Versteeg and Jagr.
That's really healthy, yet behind Anaheim. How Anaheim is 4 pts up on the Flames (but the Flames hold 2 games in hand) speaks to both teams I think.
“I’m told that Arizona is looking for a like player, so in that age category, and maybe a player who has underachieved with his organization and like Anthony Duclair, wants and needs a fresh start. So it might be a player like that, or I also heard Arizona would happily take a draft pick, hoping for as high as a second-round pick.
“But yesterday I was told it was heating up, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Duclair gets traded – I can’t say in the next couple of days, but I would say that he could be traded within the week.”

As much as it sucks to think about Jagr being done, it is a worrying pattern that he seems to play for a couple of games, looks gassed after most of his shifts, and then takes a bunch of time off. The motor is clearly sucking fumes at this point.
Why put Hamilton on waivers if Jagr is going to retire the next day?
In all likelihood they could have recalled Hrivik tomorrow after Jagr retires no?
Why lose an asset for nothing if Jagr was going to open up a roster spot?
I'm not saying it won't happen it just makes one wonder... Even if he's put on IR to rehab his groin it would still open a spot so the whole thing is puzzling unless more is going on that we are unaware of at the moment..
