Duclair for Brouwer... I would be so happy!

Lazar for Duclair just makes sense for both teams. Come on Treliving, make it happen.

Yeah, not sure why but it seems like a foregone conclusion he winds up on the Flames.

I partially agree, there is no real need to have all 5 guys when we have some prospects so close to being ready. What it does do is makes someone expendable. The Flames have the option of trading Brodie or Hamilton soon and/or Stone next year. Prospects have more value after they've played some games in the league to show what they can do. The team needs to find a way to either make permanent spots for those prospects or get them up to show what they can do to increase their value.

Something has to give on the back end soon IMO

Agreed, Brodie's likely the one the Flames want to trade, Hamilton is likely the one teams want.

What's the point? Duclair will play the odd game and when he does will probably play on the 4th line, then won't produce as much and we'll start talking about trading him for someone else.

Rinse repeat for all young projects.

Fair.

But what ever happened to Duclair? Rushed to the NHL? I mean this guy could do it all and did at the WJC.. early on in AZ he was managing to translate his play to the NHL. I really liked this kid and thought he was a stud.. is it just a case of being rushed and ruined and a change of scenery perhaps could re-ignite that fire?

Lazar always had that question mark.. he was either going to be a stud or a fringe NHL’er. Lazar could still manage to figure it out though. But he needs to start thinking the game faster to keep up.

Do the Flames need another left shooting left winger?

I have to agree with this. I'm not very happy with the direction the GM took over the summer.

Duclair can play both wings, and has some finishing ability. I'd take that over a guy who can't do anything out there. Lazar is a lost cause. I'd roll the dice on Duclair.

The boys on Hockey Central @ Noon talking about Karlsson and Stone “not being available”...

McLean asks “but is Ottawa going to be able to sign them?”

Let’s talk about Stone for a minute. Would he be willing to join his bro in YYC as a UFA?

Also, to circle back to the convo yesterday between Patches vs Stone in terms of trade return...

If Ottawa isn’t going to be re-signing Stone or able to, the hard sell to move him at the deadline is going to dramatically affect his trade value and could quite possibly be the great equalizer in terms of return for both players.

You’ve suggested a trade where the main part going back is a signed Backlund to a deal that if it could be done would already be done.

I think posters hope that’s what he will sign for, it’s clearly less than what he could get as a UFA.

How many sign and trade deals do you see in the NHL?

I doubt Backlund would sign a below market deal ahead of UFA to simply allow himself to be traded to a rebuilding team.

He might do such a deal with Calgary, as its home for him, but it will include no trade protection.

Mark Stone is an RFA this off-season, not a UFA.

The Sens still have control over him, and his value will be huge if they are even willing to part with him.

... $22 mil over 4 years for Backlund is a home town discount now? I don’t think so.

He may get slightly more as a UFA because players get overpaid as UFA’s but $5.5-$6m/yr is what he is worth.

I think both the Kings and Ducks are good largely because of their tending and D. Getzlaf and Perry are great players, but the reason they are able to withstand injuries is because of the terrific blueline they've assembled.
But I do think there is more than one way to build a team. You just gotta pick your approach and execute it well.

$5.5 million AAV for Backlund over any term is absolutely a discount.

Sure, but the Ducks developed their D. Kings, don't know enough about them to comment. That's to say that going out and acquiring a bunch of good D men (on paper) doesn't look like it's a winner. I understand why Tre did it. It was basically the only move he thought he could do to make this team take the jump.

If you don't have top skill, which you can only get high in the draft, then what's left? It's try to follow the Nashville model and build an overwhelming D. Good D men are much easier to acquire than top end skill forwards. So yeah it was a gamble. And so far it's failed.

Premature to say it failed. He acquired a guy that will be part of this team for many years.

As a UFA after July 1, he may get more and likely will. But I disagree as do many others, $5.5-$6m/ season is what a perennial 45-55 pt guy is worth right now in the NHL. Remember, he’s only broken 20 goals twice in his career, and is behind on his pace over the last 2 years in a contract year. I love Backs too but let’s get real here on what he is worth league wide, not to a few Flames fans.
