I thought Brodie looked good from the day he was called up in 2012 through GG’s arrival.

All things being equal I prefer to keep Hamilton as well but we have a coach that is enamoured with L-R pairings. Removing Brodie leaves Kulak in the top 4 and very little outside of Valimaki and Kylington in the system.

Right side the Flames have Hamilton, Hamonic, Stone and Andersson. I feel Andersson could step into the lineup immediately.

Really the reason I consider moving Hamilton over Brodie is the fact I think Dougie can return a long term high end forward in a trade. Brodie I don’t think carries that value right now.

Tippett may have had to employ a boring style with the talentless Coyotes, but he put up multiple 110 point seasons with a talented Stars lineup. He's the guy I wanted when they hired Brent. With ties to Tre I think he would be the best guy to replace Gulutzan. If ownership can be convinced that winning is more important than paying three head coaches at once.

Yikes that's a cast of horrific players.

While I agree that this team likely needs a tougher coach with a respected NHL tenure to move forward, I think Hartley's time with the team was done. That style of coaching maybe gets you some 2-3 seasons where the club is milked hard of whatever talent it has before they start tuning him out.
I think there are different types of tough coaches. I think players can accept a coach being demanding and verbalizing those expectations. But it did sound like Hartley would make his toughness somewhat personal with his little digs and quips. I think that would rightly grate on players.

I'd be fine with Dave Tippett. He got plenty out of terrible rosters in Phoenix. He has pedigree as an experienced coach and he has that presence about him, he's a guy that demands respect. He might be my first choice but I could live with it.

All this talk of trading Brodie for Kane or Hoffman is not nearly enough return for him. Travis freaking Hamonic got a 1st and 2 seconds for Pete sakes. A rental winger that's been well know to be locker room cancer and a guy that's as cold as any flame?

Defenceman have a higher value than wingers by quite a fair amount.

Wonder if the Flames could be interested in Max Pacioretty.

I still go back to the hiring of Dave Cameron. What GM in his right mind hires a coach whose former team had the worst power play in the league...to run the goddamn power play?
The same GM that traded away 6 top 60 draft picks for a defence that allows 33+ shots a game.

GG is getting a lot of the heat that BT should be getting. He is overrated.

A lot of fans hate his brand of boring hockey though. And I'm not sure this d corps can do what needs to be done in his system. Yeah I know OEL was good under Tippett.

Point is, it may not have been Tippett's 1st choice to employ that boring system with the Coyotes. Tippett may have had no choice but to use that system with the Coyotes because they had such a by and large terrible group of players.

Agreed. I certainly wouldn't trade Brodie for an impending UFA. Not without some picks attached to it anyway. Given where the Flames are, or where they want to be, you would ideally want an established scoring winger in their prime where the team has control. You need someone who can help them now and for the next 2-3 years, or more.

I hope not. I watch quite a few Habs games (wife and in-laws are French Canadian so I’m forced at times).. but when I do, I always pay special attention to pacioretty and I am constantly left wondering what is so great about this guy and how he ended up as captain.

He does not have that 2nd gear nor the will to take over a game. He is a bit of a perimeter player most of the time and doesn’t win a ton of puck battles. Since losing most puck battles he somewhat drags his ass back into the play.

Perhaps a change of scenery would do him good but I can’t see it with the Flames. Perhaps on a US team where he can have some national pride and desire to win there. But I just can’t see him being the answer for the Flames. And then consider the cost to acquire.. No thanks.

Only deal I would be willing to make with the Habs is Galchenyuk and Plekanec for Backlund.

Both teams assume risk here. Backlund could perhaps test Free agency and Habs could lose out but the Flames take an equally big risk.

Plekanec is all but washed up offensively and Galchenyuk May never turn out to hit his potential.

I could see the risk being worth it for both teams.

Personally, I don't care if Tippett's system boring as long as the team win. It's not as if GG's system is entertaining.

Well at least that shows that he is able to adapt and create a system suited to his personnel.

How many top 60 picks does a team need in a five year window?

2013: three 1st round picks
2014: one 1st & two 2nds
2015: traded our 1st for an established top 4 D who is 22. Two 2nds
2016: one 1st & two 2nds
2017: one 1st

Being a GM isn't as simple as collecting draft picks, not if the expectation is to win.

He's more streaky than Monahan and cannot play in his own end, at all. His contract is good and that's about it. No way I'm looking at Patches.

I really hope not. I expect the cost to be significant and he only has one year remaining where he will be looking for a raise and long term deal for his 31+ age range. I prefer Evander Kane to Pacioretty even though Kane is a pending UFA. Better style

Massive overstatement.
There was also zero salary cap and potentially the best team ever assembled up the road that Fletcher's job was to compete against. Different era, And even Fletcher has admitted in recent years that GM'ing was much easier back then than it is now.
