Can't put this on Tre. On paper, he has assembled a strong D core. Unfortunately, they're all playing their worst hockey. Can't call out Tre for that.

I can't figure it out.

Is the system difficult for the D to play in?
Are the D careless?
Are the D overly nervous and holding their sticks too tight?

From the start of the season, there hasn't been many games where the Flames were able to play a strong defensive game. It is either out-scoring the opposition, or forcing Smith to steal games. At the start of the season it was all Smith stealing games, lately it has been the Flames out-scoring the opposition.

Way too many high-quality chances are being allowed. With Smith back there, I don't care how many shots is directed his way, as long as they are not up close. Get in the damn lanes. Stop turning the puck over at the most inopportune moments. Stop being so bad.

Aside from Smith, I was most keen on seeing how fricken amazing this D was going to be. A D that is fully capable of defending well, and deadly on the transition. All I see is poor coverage and poor decision making.

It often looks like the Flames have one top pairing defencemen and then 5 bottom pairing. Giordano is so under-appreciated. Yeah, he has made some errors this season, but he is without a doubt the only consistently good defencemen. Hamilton hasn't found his game yet this season. Brodie has been inconsistent - damn amazing for a stretch, and then damn awful as well (often within the same game). Hamonic I thought WAS improving... The bottom pair was a tire fire tonight. I am wondering if this is where Kulak sort of 'fades' - I swear that kid comes in and plays fairly well for a stretch, and then seemingly fades. I hope he keeps it together this season, as when he is playing well he looks really good out there.

The Flames have a 5 man roster that is playing well. Let me show you the only consistently good lineup thus far in the season:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Giordano - Smith
Smith

Smith needs two mentions as he has been one of the better defencemen when he is out to play the puck, and of course he has been excellent as a goalie.

There is simply too many breakdowns happening. Even in the games that the Flames win, there are simply too many things going wrong. You can't expect Smith to steal every game, and you can't expect to out-score the opposition. This D that is awesome on paper has been anything but. I don't know what is worse this year - the way the D have been playing as a whole, or the bottom 9 forwards as a group in any given game.

Flames lose because of a lack of defensive ability, and they lose because of a lack of contributing depth. That's what it looks like to me.

I am still not clamoring for Gulutzan to get fired, but I do see the irony in Gulutzan not being able to fix the defence on this team, even though that was first and foremost a reason Treliving hired him.

Calgary has a damn good goalie right now, what should amount to as one of the league's best defensive corps, an elite shut-down line, and fairly good talent and depth. There isn't an excuse for having these many grade A chances against, and a GA average that is starting to get bloated.

Lots of time to fix this, and being in the worst division in the NHL is surely helpful, but I haven't seen much improvement outside of an isolated game or two.

How can you not. He is ultimately responsible for the product he puts on the ice. I'm not saying it's 100% fair but who said business was fair. Let's not forget about the Troy Brouwer's and Curtis Lazar's. I know he's done some good things as well he's picked up Mike Smith but he also picked up an Eddie Lack. It seems for every good move he makes there's always one bad one in the shadows. I just don't think Treliving is a very good hockey guy but he's a great business GM.

The defensive woes look to be systematic to me. It isn’t a coincidence that all defense,en make the same dumb plays all the time. Just like the stupid predictable drop pass on the PP, the defensemen looked schooled to use the against-the-grain puck movement deep in their own zone, for some unknown reason. It is predictable and it is consistent. The Flames defensemen go out of their way to work against the flow, and it results in turnovers in the defensive zone. This is systematic. This team has way too much talent and players with pure hockey sense to do this crap this consistently without it being part of the system.

The roller-coaster of emotion that is CP.

Win four in a row, “Gulutzan is a great coach, this team is legit, Treliving is a wizard, etc.”

Lose two in a row and “Bennett is a bust, Hamilton sucks, Brodie should be waived, we should never play the fourth line, Gulutzan is the worst coach we have ever seen, Versteeg should never play a game in the NHL again, etc.”

A number of “fans” on this board are starting to remind me of Oilers fans these days

They’re not going to win every game FFS and they are going to look like **** occasionally. That doesn’t mean they’re a bad team. Everybody has stretches where they look bad, it’s the nature of the game.

It is frustrating that they’re beating themselves right now but if they win tonight in Colorado, 3-2-1 is a decent road trip.

It’s an 82 game season, it’s not all going to be positive.

Great post and one of the reasons I tend to stay away from GT on game days. Personally I enjoyed the game. Saw some good efforts out there.

Tre has done his job by assembling the best roster he can and managing the cap. It's on the players ultimately to perform to their best potential. Tre has zero control on that. After most signings and trades, the entire hockey community (outside of CP) just praises Tre.

Also, building a team will never be perfect. the fact that our GMs short comings are 4th liners and backup goalies is a damn good thing. I would much rather have those problems rather than the issues up north.

Glen said he actually thought his team had a mostly good game outside of the last bit in the 3rd with those mind-blastingly bad mistakes, said every last one just seemed to find the back of the net.

The Flames weren't really penalized by a systematic lack of defence this game, more due to a lack of team commitment and focus to defence. Lazy puck-watching, not moving one's feet, "wtf was that" decisions holding the puck in the defensive zone. Things that would never fly with any coach above peewee level, let alone at the NHL level. I would have made paint peel off the walls myself.

Frustrating loss due to turnovers. That’s about it. This team is still good, no need to grovel about this one.

You in the bold illustrate the frustration with a lot of fans. Under Gulutzan it's always a run of wins/losses or good play/bad play with little in the way of consistency. There's never consistent quality play from week to week. You never know if they will have a good week or bad week and quite frankly it's getting old in season two. You say it's the "The roller-coaster of emotion that is CP" I say The Roller-Coaster of Glen Gulutzan's Flames not only rivals that but eclipses it as even the most glass half full people can't honestly claim they know what to expect from this team on a nightly basis. I would not be surprised in the least if the team rebounded and beat on the Avs tonight but I would also not be surprised if they hand out Rittich to dry and lose another sloppy, high scoring game. No team is ever going to win a Stanley Cup when their play on a night to night basis mirrors the flipping of a coin.

Good points. But it’s also a function of being on the playoff bubble, so there hasn’t been any sustained stretches of good play. It’s commendable to go with faith and hope but if you live and die with on ice results, I sympathize with fans and their reactions to some extent.

Is it possible that playing with Gio made Brodie look better than he really is? He hasn't been great since he left Gio's side. Similar thing but in reverse happened to Hamilton with the Flames. He went from iffy to good as soon he played with Gio (tonight not withstanding)

I'm not sure, but before I'm trading someone, I will change the coach. I like these players and young guys in our farm team. But under GG they are not performing at level they can play. GG system is too easy to protect or too dificult to execute.

The 3M line has arguably been one of the top shut down lines in the league over the past 14 months, so I can't see why you'd blend that up. The top line is performing. He's changed up the 4th line a few times but I don't know who you can put on the third line from that 4th line to mix it up.

I would like to know what has happened to the shut down D we had last year. When we had a lead in the third last year we could close out games with inferior goaltending and D. I am starting to think that Hamilton is overrated. I have already shared my thoughts on Brodie's incomplete game. I would use him to bring in secondary scoring like Simmonds.

Philly is a tire fire and will have to move some of its core to advance. They appear to have been fleeced on the Schenn trade so may be reluctant. They have a young D core and a fresh start might be good. This allows us to bring in Andersson who has the composure we need. We don't need a D that is the best on paper.

Brodie still looked all-star caliber when Gio went down and he was paired with Engelland. This is 100% being forced to play his “true” side. Why not put your players in the best possible position to succeed, coach?

Just wanted to point out that a 3-2-1 record stretched over 82 games is a 96 point playoff team. So yeah, I can totally live with that kind of road trip. Gotta get the W tonight though.

My concern is that we look like we can win the Division and beat any team but our lack of consistency would prevent us from beating a good team in a best of 7 series.

We’re a borederline playoff team with the 2nd best line (or3rd) in the NHL right now. The other 2 teams with the best lines are 1st and 2nd in the NHL.

This is a massive , terrifying issue IMO

Yeah one might believe that once our D shapes up and the bottom 6 gets some better luck, we will be rolling.

But what if/when that happens the first line and Smith have cooled off?

If you’d told me that our first line was dominating and Smith was excellent, I’d have expected we would have a much better record. I would like to see Treliving start to cycle through more call ups if current trend continues.
