The code is garbage anyways. Guys will say so and so broke the code and then go out and cheap shot others.

It's not that all uncommon. I can remember Clarkson (I think it happened in pre-season) and Carcillo facing the same suspension a while back. I am sure there were others.

Hockey is NOT U.F.A. which in my opinion is not a sport, the NHL is NOT Slapshot! Mantha will get tuned in, you don't hold a guy down and keep throwing punches, that goes against the grain. If he wants to change sports I might suggest MMA.

Actually fighting is already breaking a rule. From there it is just levels of violence and penalty. Let’s say he kept wailing on him after he was unconscious and bloody. Your correct there isn’t a specific rule that you can’t try and kill someone in a hockey fight, but there are still a variety of rules that can be used to deal with an egregious behaviour. Same as there isn’t a specific rule that you can’t chase down a player from behind, blindside sucker punch him and drive him into the ice. But there were still substantial penalties incurred.
But it is subjective....the one or two late shots will tend to be ignored as long as there is no significant injury, but at some point it needs to be sanctioned.
Either way, yes there are rules against fighting, and any further violence from there.

The refs did a horrible job dealing with Witkuckski. Right at the start of the game when he went goon squad after Ferland the refs should have known.
Calling what Tkachuk did a spear really takes down the credibility of the refs and the league. Can we confirm there is a bias against the Flames when phantom majors and phone hearings are being handed out. Pathetic. If there are any refs who lurk here then know we hate you all.

wondering if December 19th the Wings vs. the Isles will be an exciting game?
Gotta think Hamonic still has a lot of friends back on that team....

This all seems heavy handed to me, but a rule is a rule. I can see 10 games for coming back down the tunnel after play has resumed or jumping off the bench and starting a brawl.
Guys can take someones head off and end their career and only get 4 games. weird logic the NHL has.
And Tkachuk hit him intentionally with the blade of his stick, that's a spear. It wasn't Marchand level spearing but it meets the criteria.
|
The intent of the rule is quite literally to prevent exactly what happened here. When shenanigans break loose to the point of line brawl numbers or greater, the officials are drastically outnumbered and need to be able to assess the danger of multiple events and start one by one bringing them to an end.
Getting a player off and directed to the dressing room is one of the most important and effective things an official can do to get things back to order.
From the perspective of a linesman, having removed him from the ice and directed him to leave, you need to know with certainty you no longer need to worry about dealing with that guy.
It is worse when you consider the guy was taken from the penalty box (where he was already secured) and directed to leave for the express purpose of ensuring he physically would not be around after the final buzzer.
Minor hockey kids understand this completely. At any level of pro hockey (if you are actually a pro) you know 100% that trip across the ice from the penalty box is not a time you can ever get involved in something. You are for want of a better term a dead man walking.
This guy coming back out disrupted everything and led to the linesmen being separated and not being able to prevent Mantha taking serious advantage of Hamonic (among other things).
If Tkachuk gets treated harshly, it will likely be for the same concept...not because what he did was a spear (give me a break on that) but because he saw fit to engage a guy who was no longer part of the game in a manner anyone could foresee could lead to him raging and once again becoming a problem.

he probably does still have friends on the team, and likely none of them would risk hurting their own team for him.
why would they? it's a silly thought.

Here's the best look at Mantha throwing cheapshots from on top of Hamonic.

Thing with Mantha was he was assailing a defenseless player in a vulnerable position. Doesn't that warrant something?
