does anyone honestly think beneett was going to overhand him.. clock him.. with his stick..? would have connected with his gloves first..
bennett is undisilipined.. he's not insane..
Yes. When i saw that live i was thinking wtf? Bennett isn't the brightest bulb in the room.
Has to be a different offense that occured within the scrum which drove the 5 minute major....
If that was the offense, then the officials complete blew the call.
They should have handed him a 10 minute misconduct.
Flames should be contacting the league, and asking for a clarification on the 5 minute major for spearing....
In the mayhem I guarantee Witkowski was yelling about getting speared. Still shouldn't make the call without seeing it, but it would have sounded pretty convincing based on how he came back onto the ice in a rage. Also the game was over and it was a way to get rid of Tkachuk so he doesn't start anything else.
Again I don't agree with the call, I can just understand how it was made. Tkachuk takes a quick stride towards him when they were near centre and he looks like he wants to tap him then, but holds off... and then has enough. I can see the league just wanting to talk to him about that play and how it was not acceptable, and maybe a fine occurs. Zero chance he gets a game.
On Mantha... I can't imagine that if he was in the middle of the ice, on top of Hamonic and continued to throw punches for as long as he did, that he wouldn't be getting a suspension or fine of some kind. So he takes advantage of a situation where he can't be stopped by an official and he is laying into a guy he has 3 inches and 20 pounds on. Complete BS. One of the dirtier things I've seen. Worse than a bad hit in my mind as there was ample opportunity to stop punching a guy when he falls through the boards. Just a complete garbage play from a player I really like.

Witkowski om suspension: "It's unfortunate. I didn't know that was a rule. Lesson learned." Said he wouldn't have responded to Tkachuk spear if known rule. "Nobody wants to sit out 10 games."

#1. He didn't know the rule? Wow...even casual fans know this rule.
I'm sure the Flames are bringing up the Mantha incident with the league. But given how things have gone the past few years, I'm sure this is falling on deaf ears. Only saw two guys hit someone who was on the ground, and both were Red Wings.
If Tzachuk gets a suspension, it would be wrong, he was sticking up for his team mates after Witkowski body slammed Kulak to the ice, then skated by the Flames bench taunting and challenging them. The guy is a neanderthal and doesn't deserve to be on skates. There was no spear, just a love tap on the leg telling him "get off the ice dirtbag".chair:

#2. Why is he still calling this a spear??
I don't think a lot of casual fans, or even more serious ones would have thought what he did was the intent of the rule and worthy of a 10 game suspension. He had barely stepped of the ice and was still being engaged by a player on the ice. One who actually followed him and could have skated away.
This all seems heavy handed to me, but a rule is a rule. I can see 10 games for coming back down the tunnel after play has resumed or jumping off the bench and starting a brawl.
Guys can take someones head off and end their career and only get 4 games. weird logic the NHL has.
And Tkachuk hit him intentionally with the blade of his stick, that's a spear. It wasn't Marchand level spearing but it meets the criteria.

Once you are told to leave you are done, so one step off the ice doesn't matter. If he had taken 10 steps would it have been bad? 5? 3? The intent of the rule is that once you have been kicked out of the game you immediately leave, foot location is irrelevant.
Also, a spear is a jab with the point of your stick (toe or butt end), not hitting with the blade of your stick, that's called a slash.

Exactly what I was about to say. That was in no way a spear; point of stick. Wish people would stop saying that. It was a slash that happens dozens of times in a game. But in this situation it was to a player after play stoppage who was on his way to the showers.

My question is why didn't Mantha get more, for pummeling Hamonic in the hallway? He definitely went against the code. It's too bad they don't meet again this season, it definitely would be interesting.

What rule did Mantha break? Is there a rule for fighting on the ground? I'm genuinely curious.
The code is garbage anyways. Guys will say so and so broke the code and then go out and cheap shot others.

No they don't. Hell, most hardcore fans didn't know it was a rule until people starting digging it up following the melee. I was listening to the Fan 960 when that went down and they weren't calling for an immediate suspension either. The guy is a goon, a career minor leaguer, but no need to pile on.
As a former referee, a spear is with the blade of the stick, a butt end is with the butt end of the stick, Tzachuk tapped Witkowski with the blade of his stick, I would be hard pressed to call that a slash even. There is a big difference between sticking up for your teammates as Matthew was doing, and using an opposing player as a chisel to punch a hole in the ice which is what Witkowski did. Fighting in hockey is one thing, being a goon is another, I know which category to put Witkowski in.
