Nah. Dumdum came back on the ice after the tap. None of which should matter when it comes to the automatic 10 games. I don't know if it makes any difference, in regard to how the league looks at the Tkachuk 'spear', that he engaged a player off the ice.

It sucks to get lit up 8-2. But that loss counts the same as a 2-1 loss, so you regroup quickly and move on.
There were some positives to be taken from that brawl though. Kulak, who is a relatively new and junior member of the club was getting roughed up and the whole team, from the Captain down, were ready to get in there for some retribution. Even Boring Monahan was fired up as all hell. Hamonic never shies away from a tilt, and Tkachuk is just a beauty. He's been playing like a vet since his first few games in the NHL.
This type of thing can unite a team in anger and passion, and all of a sudden guys start playing for each other more. Good things to follow.
Having said all that, I fully expect the league to come up with some BS excuse as to why no Detroit players will be suspended, Gully gets a $25k fine, Tkachuk gets three and Ferly gets $5k fine. What good is it being an Original Six if you don't get perks from the league? All 200 of their fans would be pissed if they received any supplemental discipline.

HockeyCentral at Noon interviewed Gary Galley and now Jeff Blashill. Cynically I don't expect any Flames representation to be spoken to.

This was absolutely not the difference in last night's game. Lack clearly did not have a good night, but it is a leap to suggest that Smith would have fared so much better in that circus.

harmonic took the high road about mantha.
"He's a good, young player, but he's a young player and he'll learn that there's a code in those sort of things," Hamonic said. "He'll be on the other side of it one day and realize that's probably not the way you act."
Witkowski is just an idiot. I personally think he should get at least 10 games, but I suppose we'll see.

After watching the high view from when the refs are over by the penalty box and one linesman is escorting the Detroit clownoff the ice. Not a single official was actually looking at or saw Tkachuk touch that players leg. Calling major penalties that none of them saw. Good job clowns.

The Athletic detroit had a somewhat balanced article on last night's game. They definitely play off Witkowski's antics though.

The first moment the notion that this late-game fight might escalate into something more came when Luke Witkowski finished fighting Flames defenseman Brett Kulak and immediately wanted to take on someone else.
In this case, it was another Flames defenseman, Travis Hamonic. Witkowski was definitely salty.
“We were kind of jawing at each other during the game,” Witkowski explained.
But it wasn’t until the extra prodding from Flames agitator Matthew Tkachuk that this thing went haywire

I thought it was pretty clear the linesman escorting him off saw it. He went straight to Tkachuk after it anyway. Can linesman still report only major penalties? Might this be why it was 5?

After watching it again, Witkowski is just a meat head who went crazy. I don't like the pounding on the ice of a defenseless Kulak, and then the challenging another guy right after is total bush league. But he's a meathead fringe player that is about to be suspended for 10. Witkowski was thrown off and the Flames were pissed, but they probably should have left well enough alone. Tkachuk's "spear" was not a spear, and the whole team was clearly pissed at the guy, but not a great idea to escalate.
However Mantha, a really good young player throwing rights into the face of Hamonic who is defenseless at the open door to the tunnel is deplorable. He will probably go unscathed, but there isn't much in the rule book for that, so he will likely get a hand slap at most. That pisses me off. You could even see the Detroit player grabbing at Mantha trying to get him off Hamonic.
It also wouldn't surprise me if Tkachuk, who's reputation precedes him get a decent hit of discipline, he didn't really do much but his reputation combined with being in the middle of the altercation will probably render him guilty of being the gasoline that stoked the fire. Or something stupid like that.

Not really. Aside from Brodie, Hamonic, and Lack who played like absolute s***, the rest of the team overall played a very solid game minus a couple mistakes.
We had 12 5v5 high danger scoring chances vs their 6 and out chanced them 30 to 19 overall 5v5. Brodie and Hamonic were on for 4 of their high danger scoring chances.
There was no reason the score should've been what it was

But to suggest that a coach has 0% of a role in finding ways to make that kind of stuff not happen? Where do you get that idea?
|
From the fact that the coach’s job is to give them the tools, not play the game for them.
You really think it’s the job of the coach to make sure players at the highest level are drinking water? Sorry, I don’t think so. These players know how to get up for a game of hockey. The job of the coach is to give them all the tools they might need and show them how to use it, not spoon feed them. A player not being able to get up for an NHL game is 100% on them.

Those stats need context though. Detroit went ahead early and weren't really pressing anymore. Teams play differently when they have an established lead

I didn't see a Calgary team that played all that different from the one that lost to Ottawa, so no, Smith probably wouldn't have fared better.
