I'm old enough to remember Jim Robson and yes he was very good doing play-by-play. I always liked when he took a moment to give a special hello to hospital patients and shut-ins, those folks who can't get out to hockey games, but enjoy either listening to the radio or watching on HNIC.

He's not stuck at TSN. He could have left, but chose to stick with TSN to continue doing CFL and local TSN NHL broadcasts(they have Jets/Sens/Leafs/Habs).

Not sure how much left Rogers has on their current Flames local deal(I think a lot), but I would love to see TSN scoop the rights when they're available. Not only for Cuthbert, but the overall production of the broadcast is just so much better.

Bob Cole has a great hockey voice. So did Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin.

Quite amazed that the original poster put Dave Randorf up there as a good pbp guy. Want to turn the volume off when I hear him do a game. Also surprised to see anyone mention Steve Armitage. Another really poor pbp guy is Vick Router.

As for colour, I think it's a tough job and more guys come off poorly than well. Dick Irvin was the only really great one I can think of. I think colour commentators usually tend to annoy more people than they impress.

I loved Peter Maher and Doug Barclay as a kid. Learned more about hockey from Barclay than anyone else I ever heard and you always got the impression that Maher did too. But looking back, for all the guys calling out Hughson et al for being homers, Maher and Barclay were major homers. I think it's hard to avoid when you call all the games for a team for years.

Agree that he's a good pbp guy, but terrific voice? That's a first.

Was just going to say, when he isn't horribly biased (which he generally is) he calls a really good game.

Peter Maher is my all time favourite. I also liked Mike Rogers. I like Loubo and Wills is starting to grow on me.

As far as TV goes, I really like Rick Ball, Hrudey, Miller, Cuthbert, and non-Canucks game Hughson. I can't stand Randorf, Romanuk, Quinn, or Remenda. Put me in the Doc Emrick is horrible group, although the NHL games may have played a part in that.

Both the Flames and Oilers sportsnet deals expire in the 2020 season

Joe Bowen, local Leafs broadcaster. Very popular in Leafland. Holy Mackinaw! is his catchphrase.

I was at a game in the ACC once in a suite, work event so booze was free and I was smashed. I get into the elevator at intermission and he and Harry Neale are in there. Of course being hammered I am Mr. Cliche and drop a "Holy Mackinaw, look who I am in the elevator with" In a loud obnoxious voice, naturally. Harry Neale kinda chuckled but Bowen didn't flinch or even acknowledge me. /end cool guy story

Loubo is an integral part of the flames community. Clearly has his finger on the pulse of the team and loves hockey. I really like his contributions on the radio.

Having said that, he was awful as the Flames play by play guy. Only Kerr was worse.

Ball is the best we’ve had in decades.

Love Ball and Hrudey, Love Wills and Loubo. I'm just glad we don't have to hear Glenn Healey anymore, I hated that beeotch.

Dan Kelly. He had a voice that just made you turn up the volume. Canada Cup 87 and so much before. Such a shame he passed when he was 53 in 1989. He had 20 years left and would have been a monster nationally in the modern digital era.
