I did the hill that almost killed us after Granary Road again. It almost killed me again. It’s not the steepest but seems to be that perfect combination of grade and distance that wipes you out.

This morning I rode whiptails, braggin' right and Merlin. Trails were running ridiculously fast, and the colours were something else.

Took me 95 minutes with about 5 to 7 minutes of resting time.

Also spent some time today tuning up the fat bike and installing a dropper seatpost, fenders and a new handlebar and stem.

I made it. I decided not to go up powderface, but instead headed to Romulus Backcountry Camp ground. Getting out there was tough. It doesn't look up hill, but it's basically uphill the entire way (duh, going into the mountains).

The last 12km once I hit dirt at Little Elbow was tough. I didn't have much left in the tank and there was about 5 places I had to hike-a-bike in the last 7 km because they were just too steep for me on a loaded touring bike.

I didn't do the whole loop, I will definitely go back to do that at some point, but probably drive to Powderface and park then ride in. I probably could have completed the loop this morning, but I really didn't feel like doing another 400m elevation on double track with a 65lb bike before cycling 90km home.

The highlight was definitely the double track. Getting away from the cars and being basically the only one out there is amazing. And coming down that stuff is so much fun, even on my rigid frame.

Spoiler!

I took some video, may try to put a short video together.

So who has their winter rigs ready for tomorrow? I’m good to go. Looking forward to it in a perverse way.

After doing 180km this weekend I was going to take tomorrow off...then I looked at the forecast and realized I have my summer tires on my car. So I might not have a choice.

Well, it's been a nice summer...time to find my warm weather gear! Looks like the road is just wet, not snowy so fortunately I don't have to swap the studded tires on. The wind looks brutal! Hopefully it switches to the south by the time I have to ride home! Sorry to all you riding northers.

Spoiler!

Huge propos to you guys who rode this morning. you are beasts.

That part was easy. I'm riding from the north. Going home is gonna suck.

I work from home on the first snow day of the year. It saves my sanity. But if I'm being honest with myself, I probably wasn't going to ride in today anyway.

It was actually quite nice, if you factored out that freaking north wind. That was a heck of a slog up the nose creek valley, climbing fox hollow hill into it was brutal. I've earned a tailwind for this afternoon.

A few slick spots, my rear tire really is a full summer...hope it stays warm enough not to freeze up. Fingers crossed for a wind switch! Sorry Bigtime.

You guys are masochistic. That wind isn't even something I want to stand still in for 30 seconds. Forget riding a bike into it.

It was at my back the whole way, plus, come on this is Canada! It's like, zero. This is nothing. Some people have gotten soft after this warm summer!

Put on some ski goggles and you're good to go.

I know some of the frostbikers aren't big on the ski goggles, but to each their own. I was rocking them plus my winter boots today. I ended up layering up way too much for the actual temp and the extra exertion required to ride into that wind. Definitely shedding layers for the ride home.

Speaking of ski goggles, I really need some with a clear lens. I got some last year, but the only ones I could find are for MX, and only single layer so they fog up immediately. Anyone know where I could find some?

yeah, i need goggles with a clear lens as well. i didn't use the goggles this morning because my lens is too dark for this weather, but then my sunglasses with clear lenses just get fogged up.

No, I don't do much of the "social" stuff! I don't even have a high tech way to track it, just using an old school cycle computer. I guess I do have a Garmin, but that is on my mountain and road bike.

There are light weight ones (I have a road bike version) and at least that takes the stress off the seat post and puts it into the lower axel part of the frame.
