I'd like to see him start on Backlunds wing. Seems to be a common thing with Flames rookies, plus it's a great place for him to see some success.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Bennett - Versteeg
Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
Glass - Freddie - Brouwer
Stajan - Lazar

If that's really an issue then there are various possibilities to fix that probem:
Option #1:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Jankowski-Bennett-Versteeg
Lazar-Stajan-Brouwer
Option #2:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Jankowski-Backlund-Frolik
Tkachuk-Bennett-Versteeg
Lazar-Stajan-Brouwer
Option #3:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Lazar-Bennett-Versteeg
Jankowski-Stajan-Brouwer
I just don't see the coaching staff pushing out Stajan in order to play Jankowski as the 4C...or Stajan playing wing on the 4th line.
The only way I see it happening is if Bennett is pushed up the lineup so that Jankowski can slot in as the 3C.
When you have Line 1 or Line 2 playing apprx 36 mins of the 60 mins ....I think your 3C can play 12-14 mins a night as a rookie and not be in deep water....when the primary matchup is going to be other team's bottom 6.

Backlund would then have played a role in the development of Bennett, Tkachuk, and Jankowski.
He would go down in history as a legend in the Flames organization.

I don't know, I have grown to believe strongly that Gaudreau and Bennett should be paired together. Bennett has the IQ and skill and speed to keep up with Gaudreaus extra gear and he has the grit and guff to protect Johnny from players taking those extra liberties.
I'd even be okay with Ferland being on that line.

I think you are correct.
Bennett would likely get more points than Monaghan would.
The road to the Stanley Cup likely runs through Bennett.
He's likely the difference maker.

My main hesitation with Gaudreau - Bennett - Ferland is the defensive zone. I just don't think any of them are strong enough defensively, and although they might put up points, I'd expect them to bleed a few as well.
That said, how about Gaudreau - Backlund - Ferland

As much as I liked Bennett playing with Gaudreau and Ferland, I don't think Bennett is as good a shooter as Monahan. Monahan is a better finisher and fits better with Gaudreau as the set up man.

Agreed.
Having said that, it's always good to have options i.e. *knockonwood* injuries.

Sure. No argument there. But Gaudreau can finish too, and I think Bennett can open up the ice more for Gaudreau and allow him to be more of a goal scorer. Add in that Bennett can finish off rebounds just as good as Monahan.
There's an undeniable chemistry between Bennett and Gaudreau. Why do people want to sell that short? And splitting up Monny and Johnny diversifies talent and gives teams more lines to focus on.
Bennett needs better wingers, Bennett can succeed in the scenario I'm presenting. And Monahan can make Tkachuk better too, and maybe someone like Versteeg or Jankowski.

I hope he makes the team and when he does I hope he gets more than just 4th liner minutes. I think he is going to be a good player for the Flames for a long time.

With Jankowski emerging from the woodwork, signing Jagr right now could push this forward group over the top. Could ensure that the team has a top 10/15 offense, to go with a top 5/10 blue line - a recipe for success.
I wouldn't be content to just settle right now if I were BT.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Bennett - Jagr
Lazar - Jankowski - Brouwer
Stajan, Glass/Hathaway/F.Hamilton/Lomberg
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Kulak - Stone
Wotherspoon
Without Jagr, slot Janko onto Bennett's wing instead of playing him on the 4th line.

I don't think that Lazar has ever played LW on a regular basis.
I expect that he'll play at RW on one of the bottom lines, there's just too many Centers ahead of him.

You might be right, he has that extra gear and edge to him. Kind of like what you see with players like Sidney Crosby where you have to have the fight and the will to win the scrimmages and the battles.
Not sure Bennett would get the same leeway with refs like some of the other players but he does have that drive and that edge. So does Johnny when he is at his best. Could be a good tandem if they can hit it off.

When was the last time a player from the farm team had this kind of pre season with the big club? Pretty cool.
