Even in this thread very few are talking about the details of the City's response. Instead they are talking about King's press conference and recharacterization of the issues.

Is it a payment by the city or is it a loan?
Is this a gift to billionaires or is it an investment in public infrastructure?
Is there a public benefit to having a world class stadium?

This isn't going to be a linear process where one side is winning on a daily basis. It's going to have ups and downs. The Flames are taking their "downs" and successfully shifting the debate.

Why didn't the Republicans have an Obamacare replacement ready after seven years?

They don't have anything worth offering. They want the same exploitative stadium deal their other billionaire friends got.

How long until Lucas Meyer gets his press pass revoked for asking if what the Flames really need is money that doesn't get paid back, and then following up with "you didn't answer the question?"

Lucas Meyer, you the real MVP.

Thing is Katz had that city by the balls.

Go back and look at his introductory press conference, he was adamant, to the point of annoyance, that he’s doing this because he grew up liking the Oilers and wants to see them stay, but onty way it works for him as a business deal is he needs the city as a partner to prove that it wants hockey up there. He said that the team needed a new building and the city needed to partner in that, or else. He repeated it. Over and over. He, the City, and everyone knew that the previously situation which had 30 owners of the team, meant that there wasn’t many who could or would step up to keep the Oilers in town. And he played that card.

But he was upfront. The next days the typical Oilers press and fans were fawning over how many Cups it meant now that they could be a cap team forever...and seemingly ignored Katz’s claims about needing the city as a partner in a rink as just idle chat. Years later when he starts following through on his original comments, and pushing the city of being that partner, he got vilified. And that City knew that if he pullled the plug, the Oilers were gone.

Flames don’t have that threat to use, yet, and nor do they want to. They have owners who’ve been committed to this city and the team for decades.

But something has to give in the next couple years.

I think the message coming out is Kings a condescending ####### who is threating to move the team instead of sitting at the table like an adult.

My speculation: they don't have a handy, clear, 1 page infographic that shows where the money comes from, and who gets what out of the deal like the City did. I'm basing this on King not being able to articulate why the Flames' proposal is a good one/has financial benefits to all pretty much ever.

I mean, I could change the media narrative today by stripping naked, lighting myself on fire, and running down Stephen Avenue. But I don't see how it would actually advance my position or increase my credibility.

Maybe I don't understand public relations.

In fairness to King, no one has ever been able to articulate this on any of these deals in cities.

No question. What is fairly puzzling is how King and the Flames arrive at the notion that starting from scratch in the West Village plus the massive expense of site cleanup is a better course to the entertainment district goal than building in Vic Park where there are already supportive infrastructural plans in place.

King says 'just wait' and the Flames will offer their response next week - likely very early in the news cycle.

The Flames have flipped the negotiations from the boardroom into the public with the publication of their walking away. This decision isn't made recklessly. It's a calculated move.
Yes but when KK is constantly going on about how they could be gone already and how there are so many better markets than Calgary he is alienating his fan base and his cities citizens. It is like owning a restaurant and serving everyone a s##t sandwich and then expecting everyone to come back and eat there again.

The difference is they were actually good at PR and even if they weren't selling something great they could at least sell. Ken can't even sell very well. He still kind of reeks of expecting us to be happy they're doing this for us and we should be happy to contribute. A little more humility would help.
