I can't seem to find Druh's donor list either, since you mention it. Certainly from 2013. Not so much from 2017. So is her point that she's a hypocrite?

Well, that's just stupid then. Possibly a good way to piss off the judge too, since the second suit would obviously be more frivolous than the first.

Her 2013 donor list is disclosed

http://www.calgary.ca/CA/city-clerks...%20Farrell.pdf

And her 2017 list will be disclosed per city bylaws. I do agree that councilours should be required to continuously disclose donations between elections.

She always voluntarily discloses her list prior to election day.

Late to the thread, but the reason Druh Farrell has such a high profile is because she has been on council forever, and she has always sought out a high profile. Most councillors never say jack to the media, while Farrell has courted them since day one. I'd guess her name recognition in the city is over 50 per cent, while most councillors' is closer to 10.

As for the first name thing, not sure we can blame this on gender. Nobody goes around calling Diane Colley-Urquhart "Diane", even though "Colley-Urquhart" is quite a mouthful.

Is the wage gap a myth?

Depends on what you mean by myth. Once you factor in hours worked and choices of professions, the gender income gap is about 2 per cent. In Canada, single women who have never married earn 98 per cent of what single men who have never married earn. Everything changes with marriage and child-rearing, with substantial reduction in hours worked by women, and increase in hours worked by men. Even in the highest-earning professions, such as medicine, women work far fewer hours in their working lives than men.

Not sure what this has to do with Calgary municipal politics, though.

Rick Bell has a job at the Calgary Sun.

Ask him what he does and he'll tell you he writes articles people love to read. Ask others and they'll say he is a hack.

To me it is obvious, people who love to read his articles love his writing style.

I mean who wouldn't love a paragraph that is 15 words or less.

I mean sometimes he will throw in a 2-3 sentence paragraph. It shows a lot of thought. It helps setup his next line.

Often a slam dunk hit on silly hall or corrupt local leaders.

From a guy who likes to write like he is in sixth grade.

It is awesome, I think I will inly write like this from now on.

Hack they say, but people want punchy.

Rick knows a thing or two about punchy people.

Perhaps not entirely. I believe that, generally speaking, you are correct, even if you are off-base in this specific case. I also don't know where Druh being primarily identified by her first name originated.

I still don't get why "the" number isn't the central. On what basis are you stating that $120 is the "true" number?

It has a lot to do with municipal politics actually.
You implied that gender wasn't a factor in how civil society critiqued Druh Farrell. You used a comparison of another female councillor and an example of how criticism if Farrell wasn't gendered.

I was unsatisfied with your argument and felt in was a non sequitur. I felt it lacked nuance. I made a cheeky comment about the wage gap being a myth, and you responded in the same way (probably meaning to logical no nonsense) of your first analysis (that I still don't agree with). I think we make some very different basic assumptions about micro aggressions and the structural inequality of our patriarchal society.

The critiques of female so call progressive politicians, be they Farrell, Rachael Notley or Julia Gillard are most definitely coded in gender.

Should we perhaps rename this the 2017 civic election thread?

Calgary Transit is sending free transit passes to all households to encourage people to go vote:

I've actually heard a lot of derisive comments aimed at "Jason" lately, but as noted above, Trudeau is almost exclusively referred to as "Justin". You could argue that that's just to distinguish him from his dad, but I mean, his last name is the most important thing to his political success, so...

As for Nenshi, people call him that because he's marketed it so successfully. His website is Nenshi.ca. This is from the pride parade:

I honestly only know one guy who called Redford "Alison" and it always sounded really odd to me.

Seems kind of pointless. Doesn't everyone live within walking distance of their polling place?

And wouldn't it just make the most sense to have it free that day at this point?

Just under 500,000 private dwellings, assuming CT hits them all, that's nearly 1,000,000 free 90-minute tickets laying around that day. Seems like a gigantic waste of resources when a couple of signs posted strategically around town, maybe a radio ad here and there, would have been more environmentally and economically prudent.

If I had a guess, a tangible ticket/pass probably serves both as advertising for Calgary Transit and as a better reminder for people to go vote.

The way they could do it efficiently is just piggyback it off the voting information card they send out, and have the pass part of it, similar to how it is done during the Global Petroleum Show.

Again, better choice than Nenshi but so is every Mayoral Candidate running. We aren't endorsing anyone.
