I think the degree that Trump went to in terms of digital targeting was pretty unprecedented from what I've read. They also used the same data to target ads for voter suppression too; an ad targeted at black people in a close district to try and influence them to stay away from the polls.
Obama targeted the ground game to the neighbourhood level which was a big thing at the time. Trump targeted individual people.

Digital campaign is one thing. Weaponizing social media is another. Facebook is the biggest purveyor of misinformation and disinformation on the planet today. So for the people behind the Trump campaign to come out and admit the victory was a result of Facebook is just - depressing. Deception and lies were long considered core to the Trump campaign, and a massive contribution to fake news promoted through social media (Facebook and Twitter) greatly made it possible for Trump to be competitive. Add in the analytic data, and you have a recipe for not only stealing elections, but for brainwashing specific targets in the social media sphere. The ramifications of this admission are not only scary, but dangerous to our democracy in the future.

Do you think the Clinton campaign didn't employ the same tactics?
I would think every campaign going back to at least 2008 has used this same strategy...of any political stripe.
Or am I missing something here?

Clinton didn't have the same investment. Clinton didn't have Robert Mercer in her back pocket driving this program. More importantly, Clinton did not have the Russians and the Macedonians working for her to act as a force multiplier by creating fake news (real fake news) and a bot army to promote it across various social media platforms. The psychological impact of repetition, especially from a trusted network, is at a level of efficacy in swaying audiences that would give Edward Bernays a wet dream.

Obama now has the most liked tweet in Twitter history with this now over 3.1 million likes...
https://twitter.com/BarackObama/stat...23232098078720
...so since Trump is obsessed with "beating" Obama, he should realize he can easily beat this, he has the ability to probably get a 10 million liked tweet. All it would take is two words...."I resign". Come on Donny, you know you want that record.

The color of his skin? What about her? Is it sexist? Obama is sexist?!?!?!
I kid but the color of 'their' skin, etc. would have been better.

He's quoting Nelson Mandela, hence the quote marks in the tweet.

And Trump attacks Amazon today on twitter.
A company that while making it tough for some businesses to compete employs over 200,000 people in the US as of the end of 2016 and is going to hire 100,000 more US employees in the next 18 months (well that was from Feb of this year so they are well on the way).
Retaliation for the Bezos owned washington post who ran a headline of "Trump gives comfort to racists". Also just another appeal to the mom and pop store and coal miner crowd. Don't get me wrong, I don't like to see people struggling but these are economic realities that no amount of pandering or funding or policy change is truly going to reverse. In the long run those things will make things worse as instead of changing the economy or re-training the world will continue to advance without them.

So then Nelson Mandela should have broken the record for the most liked tweet...

So Trump's response to all this is to tweet "Make America Great Again" and announce a rally in Arizona.

It certainly seems to me that each successive Republican President or nominee for President is either roughly equivalent to, or (more often) worse than, their predecessor.
I can't wait to see who comes after Trump.

Lol, my bet was that he'd never go west of the Mississippi his whole presidency.

The dumbest thing about that tweet is that he is suggesting that Amazon doesn't pay sales tax, but they do now collect it for every state that has sales tax.
Just like his inappropriate brag about owning one of the largest winery in the US, when a) his son owns it and b) it is not even the largest winery in Virginia (Virginia is only responsible for .26% of wine made in the US).

whenever it gets too hot in the kitchen for Trump, he goes for a massive ego stroke in the form of a rally to convince and reaffirm himself that he's doing the right thing...... according to like 30% of the population.

The antichrist.
Seriously though I didn't think we could reach such spectacular levels of comatose after Dubya. The new mold has been cast, your move 2020.
