Was Speer wearing a uniform that clearly indicated he was a medic? Didn't someone post earlier in this thread that he was wearing Afghan civilian clothing? Even if Khadr threw the grenade he was accused of throwing, how would he have known Speer was a medic?

I'm willing to believe that it's an accident but let's not be naive or ignorant... they know collateral damage is going to happen. That's not even a debate.

Giving the money to Speer's family or another charitable cause would be a classy thing to do, I hope he does it.

Right because Canada had SO much pull their, the US would stick up their middle finger and tell us to pound sand if we asked for him to be out of Gitmo. And again, he was caught on film making IED's to kill coalition soldiers. He should be under charge for treason, no statute of limitations.

I don't think MarchHare's post was suggesting it was an accident, he was illustrating that there could not have been intent to target a medic.

For the most part yes, or, some terrorist a-hole decides to use people as human shields and the decision is made to take him out regardless. But no, I don't for a minute believe the military purposely targets civilians.

I was responding to a different post about missiles killing civilians. i dont think we kill innocent civilians on purpose with missiles and drones but we continue to do that because its an acceptable collateral damage that's been number crunched.
so to then spout off about how killing a medic is against the laws of war strikes me as wildly naive.

They purposely kill civilians to get their intended target. They know there will be civilian deaths and it didn't stop them and it won't in the future but you and others won't ever shed a tear for those innocent civilians.

Either way, your opinion would be terrible. I just want to know which way to direct my eye roll.

Had the government at least tried to stop what was happening they wouldn't have had to pay him. Not only did they not do that, they willingly participated in what was happening.
Your argument that he was doing this or he should have been charged with that or he deserved what happened or shouldn't have had any rights because of (fill in the blank) is the exact same line of thinking that got us to the point of having to pay him $10M.

If you are a 13 year old kid making bombs, you know what you're doing. You know you're not making dry ice bombs in the back yard with your buddies. He was in a terrorist camp, learning terrorist tactics and anti-west Islamic teaching. His compensation was coming back to Canada. There were over 140 Canadians who didn't get to come back to Canada because people like him built those bombs.

He said he remembers throwing a grenade and waking up in a hospital to men screaming at him that he'd killed an American soldier. For years, Khadr believed Speer's death was his doing, but now he isn't so sure. Either way, it matters to Khadr.
"Of course it does, because on one side, I killed another person and on the other side, I didn't," he said. "So it does make a huge difference."

Never said he deserved to be tortured.

Take the money out of the equation, this is about justice. He was wronged and he challenged that legally and won. If someone was a known gang member and they were wrongfully accused of killing someone you knew who was actually killed by someone else from the same gang, only to be exonerated after serving 20 years in prison, if that person sued the justice department and was awarded damages would you feel as though they should pay that money to the family of the person they didn't murder?
|
We don't know what damages a judge would have awarded because the Liberal govt didn't let the case go that far and instead chose to offer what they deemed a fair amount.
Let the elected officials pay for the damages. Taxpayers shouldn't be responsible for their screw ups.

WTF? So now it's the governments fault that his dad who was buddies with OBL , was a psycho who took him to Afghanistan to be trained by Al Qaeda? Somehow that is the governments fault?
