Stephane Da Costa is still out there apparently looking to make an NHL comeback.

I'd rather take a flyer on a guy like that with a 1 year stop gap/show me type contract than sign a way past his prime Jagr/Vanek/etc..

Marleau would still be nice, but I think that ship has sailed and the Flames couldn't fit him in anyways without somehow getting out from under Stajan's contract.

No, he didn't literally make the team grow it's worth by $2B. There were all kinds of reasons why it happened, some team-specific and some league-specific.

LeBron's comment was clueless. But he will probably be an owner one day, and his views will change.

IMO Jimmy Hayes isn't even an upgrade on Alex Chiasson.

Tre likely waiting this thing out until prices come down. I think a 1 year show me (or PTO) contracts for one of the following three would be interesting:

1. Pirri
2. Grigorenko
3. Smith-Pelley

All still young and maybe a late July signing at the end of July is enough of a shock to the system to kick start their career.

Scorpion- great job on this thread!!

This is always a ridiculous argument, but I'll play along. NBA owners and executives aren't crucial professions to our society either. You can't argue that the players are all overpaid relative to doctors without mentioning that everyone else involved in the league is just as overpaid.

That owner should sell while the iron is hot! If the the rise in worth is mostly because of Steph Curry, it's also reasonable to assume that a lot of that worth will shrink once he is no longer with the team.

Looks like Calgary is not even an option/possibility being considred by Marleau and Radulov. Which means, Ferland will continue playing on the top line. This is disappointing. I was hoping Tre can lure Radulov, especially knowing that he could be had for a 5-yr contract.

Lure him with what cap space? Why do people overlook this key component of signing a free agent.

I would be surprised if there are any more additions until after the RFAs are signed

Explain what's ridiculous? Owners have made money on other ventures and would have been rich regardless of owning a professional franchise. Athletes are rich based on their athletic talent, and they're more than fairly compensated for that.

Well I'm a bit disappointed now with the Bouma buyout. Seems like they were creating room for Sharp just for him to go back to the Hawks at the 11th hour (bringing Bouma with him to boot). Now it doesn't look like that extra cap space will be getting used.

It's a bit of a salty situation that we'll be paying for Bouma that one extra year just so Chicago could improve.

It's July 2nd, lots of time to improve the team between now and the deadline. That cap space is valuable.

Did Chicago improve with Bouma? Have to wait and see.

I am honestly starting to think we'll see an apt trade for a scoring winger no one saw coming. Tre's on a roll. I think there's a bit more magic left in between now and training camp.

I think the Flames would be fine until the deadline and win more than enough games with their forwards as is. The growth the from the young forwards will count for something. Could see 55-60 points from tkachuk, 70+ from johnny if he rebounds, 65 from mony, and hopefully 40+ from an older Bennett. But if they want to make noise in the playoffs they're gonna need to look at a rental at the deadline. Problem is we have no picks to offer, so we'd have to deal from the prospect pool. This is why a signing like sharp or marleau would've been beneficial because it can be done without giving up assets. It's too bad. Not much left to desire I'm that free agent pool. I don't have much faith in the vets there. Tbh Radulov is the only player left that could be plugged in on the top line and make a difference.

The Flames forward group is just fine as is IMO.

All they lost from the group from last season is Bouma and Chiasson. As it stands right now, Chiasson is being replaced by a full year of Lazar, and Bouma will likely be replaced by either Jankowski or Foo.

I'd be just fine betting that Lazar out produces Chiasson's 24 points, and I imagine Foo or Jankowski could out produce Bouma's 7 points with one eye taped shut.

Not to mention that 3 of the Flames top 4 scoring forwards are 24 and under and all of the top 5 scoring forwards are 29 or under, and that doesn't include Bennett or Lazar, both of whom could easily break out this season with massive amounts of offensive growth.

Really? That sounds like a real longshot to me considering that's 20 more points then he got last year and would represent a career high.

You have to free up the space to try and get things done. The cap space could come in handy at the deadline too. So time could still tell.
