The Flames were never going to have two rookies on the 3rd pairing. If it wasn't Stone, it would be someone else playing with one of the young guys.
If there's a logjam of quality, I think a guy like Stone gives you a pretty good way to recoup one of the lost 2nd round pick.

I for one an A-OK with Treliving turning his phone off tomorrow. We're going to need that cap space next year to re-sign Backlund, and Treliving doesn't exactly have a stellar track record on July 1st
If his plan is to stack the D and let the forward group grow, I'm on board with that. Flames trouble wasn't scoring, it was getting scored on

Except that we have a few million in underpayments in our already above average top four.

Think about this...
- 2017-18: Hamonic & Stone = $7.35 million, combined age: 54
- 2016-17: Wideman & Engelland = $8.17 million, combined age: 67
Top 5 gets better and cheaper.

You're out to lunch. But regardless, you've expressed this the same way multiple times in several threads now.
There's no need for you to go on spamming your outrage.
It's been noted.

10m should be enough to re-sign Bennett, Lazar and Ferland and get a quality winger tomorrow. If Tre manages to add Justin Williams to this team ...

It is honestly not that bad. Is it 500-750 more then perfect, probably. But you can trade a depth D in this league no problem.
Seriously man, comparing it to Wideman or Engelland is just plain dumb.

Bennett is not going to get $2.75. His numbers are not even close to warrant that as a RFA. Guy will be on a 2 year deal at $2.25 AAV MAX. I would even suggest that Ferland will be closer to $1.5 than $2M per.
The Flames can still easily afford a $4-$4.5M winger in free agency. Plus Brouwer can be bought out or burred if he still looks like a turd after this year.

|
The Flames forward group was far from being the problem with this team before last week. The Flames obviously feel Jankowski is an NHL player THIS season. The forward group looks young, but not one that "needs help" so much that you cry about a $2M, 2-3 spot upgrade on your bottom pairing D.
Good grief.

Had an idea!
|
Money wise it is fair.
Depth wise it is a good move.
If there is a no NMC or NTC attached it is a very trade-able contract.
Might have had to do the extra year and extra $500k to not have to do a NMC or NTC.
Injuries should be expected. A lot of people on here would have been happy with Stone as our #4 all year. Now we have a better #4 and a better #5 and people still complain?

Sure... but 3.5x3!! Young guys don't stay young sign a vet for a 1 year contract then you don't have two rookies next year.
Treliving ####ed up royally here.

If your young d-men are good enough to push him out somehow and you can save millions to dress ELC players, then you just trade his very tradable contract.
Easy peasy dude.

Yup. If anyone goes down (knock on wood) we have a guy to slip into the Top 4.

I like it... If the Brodie-Hamonic pairing doesn't have chemistry, Stone can step in as he showed he could play well with Brodie (and vice versa) last year.
