Fantastic move.
Super Top 5 D.
#TrustInTre yet again!
*Also further evidence that Calgary is indeed a desired destination for players.

This means Arizona will now also get Calgary's 5th RD pick in 2018.

Huh? Stone is going to play a limited role with some nice PP time. He is going to eat those minutes up compared to a guy like Bartkowski. The Flames now have the crazy defensive depth needed to handle the heavyweights of the western conference. If someone gets hurt, you can easily slide these top 5 guys up and down the lineup.

I don't see many negatives aside from creating a log-jam in the prospect pipeline. That would be a good problem to have though if the team needs to make a deal to give Andersson/Kulak or Kylington playing time.

No, but I'll gladly complain about the significantly overpaid #5D.

For everyone thinking it will block youngsters from coming up and playing, remember you can always trade away Stone for assets. Especially on that contract.

Forwards ~44.5$m
Defense ~$25m
Goalies ~$5.5m

Decent distribution of money across all positions.

Shucks, I'd have loved for him to sign for 3 years at 600k each year but you can't win em all. Guess we'll have to settle for amazing defensive depth. Damn.

Just last year we were paying Dennis Wideman $5.25 million and Deryk Engelland $2.9 million. Both are guys that are either out of a job, or barely hanging on to an NHL job at this point.

Stone is 27, a productive player with a good fit on the Flames, and is going to make $3.5 million for multiple years. He took a $500 K pay cut on his most recent contract in his prime playing years to sign in Calgary for 3 years.

If things don't work out, that's at least a very tradeable contract.

If it works out, the Flames have the best defense in the entire league bar none.

Please...tell me what the downside to this is again?
Funny how it's always the same people that are never satisfied

Sorry, would rather have Stone, especially if injuries occur. We still have cap space to get the winger that we need. I would have preferred two years for Stone, but after three years the dude isn't even 30 years old yet. Plus, we can move him in a trade down the line if need be.

It's possible that this defensive core is all we need to lower our GA and steal the games we need to. If Tre is going for it right now, this is how you do it.

With Stone deal in place, #Flames have approx. $9.8 million in cap space for free agency and to sign Bennett/Ferland/Lazar. #Flames
Lets say Bennett at 2.75, Ferland at 2 and Lazar at 1. Leaves us 4M to sign a winger.

Holy.....

Treliving is a frigin wizard. We have a clear 3 year window with this d.

Ugh I hate that I love the summer but am so hyped to hope it goes fast so hockey can start already. On paper, lots to like about the roster taking shape.

Total ~$21-23m

Calgary's Defence core will cost roughly 2-3 million more:

Giordano $6.750m
Hamilton $5.750m
Brodie $4.650m
Hamonic $3.857m
Stone $3.500m

Total $24.507m

Treliving is Wizard

And the #6 will likely be an entry level. It's not a cheap D core, but it's very, very deep.

It will not enable to sign an expensive free agent winger, but I'd rather not anyway. We don't have too much trouble scoring goals, and we can have a lot of growth from within from our current group of younger forwards (which are mixed in with some solid vets).

I like it.

interesting question will be what kind of trade limitations might be attached to the contract.

Yes, Hamonic and Stone are much better than Wideman and Engelland. No, this is not a good excuse for signing an unnecessary bad contract that overpays a guy for three years. Those $1m overpayments add up and prevent you from getting players that can put you over the top.

I think its a good move and a good use of cap space, better then paying 4-5 million for one of the washed up forwards over 35. This also allows the Flames to carry our younger prospects in the 6-7 defence spots.

It also will allow us to work in at least two forward prospects into the lineup.

So not.

This team as of today is much, MUCH better than last year's vintage. Like it or not this is what a #4/5 tweener will command on a contract. The Flames are fortunate to have the kind of salary flexibility they do for a few years thanks to Brodie's and Hamonic's deals to be able to pay what is agruably one of the best #5 defensemen. I have no doubt that Stone could have received more money and longer term on the UFA market.
