Im sure you meant resign.
Right? Right?
Jokes aside, I'm in agreement with you, makes no sense to buy him out. One year remaining, guy is playing for a contract and he is a good depth player to have in case of injuries.

Oilers suck.
Ideally you don't ever use the buyout but you shouldn't do every year because they compound. Don't forget the Flames still owe another million on Raymond.
Which I don't agree with, given the fact that he will be playing in Switzerland this year.
I think there should be a clause that if a player has been bought out, and they play overseas, then they lose the buyout.
Or am I just being a dumb?

For a guy who was reportedly being pursued by as many ad a dozen teams, Versteeg re-signing in Calgary for a 1-year deal at a more than reasonable price speaks to how desirable the Flames have become.
People love to say that players likely have the Flames on a list of teams / cities they'd never play for (including this forum) but this hopefully shuts people up.
At that price, I almost wish they signed him for 2 years.
I wouldn't take Versteeg as a sign of how desirable the flames are as a whole. You gotta remember, he's a guy that played for 7 teams, in the life of his two big payday contracts that lasted those 7 years.
He's now over 30, and born and raised in Lethbridge.
The Flames are the closest thing to a hometown team, and he's still making millions to play hockey. Obviously it helps that the Flames are projecting upwards, but I wouldn't expect superstar UFA's to be choosing Calgary in the near future because Versteeg did.
Really happy about this signing! He definitely earned another year with a raise!

No he wasn't. For comparision sake, lets use Brouwer. For all, we can agree he was one of our worst players on the team. Brouwer had almost 50 more hits than Bouma, and only 5 less blocked shots. For an energy guy, bouma didn't fill his role. I don't recall him getting into any fights?
During the post season 9 more guys on the team had more hits than him. And he had ZERO blocked shots during the series. He will either be buried in the Ahl, or a full time bench warmer and most certainly would not be brought back.
It's a good contract but when you send out guys like Byron, Granlund and Baertchi (all proved they can produce at NHL level) for various reason and replace with Brouwer, Chaisson and Versteeg it's hard to see net positives in the big picture.
Calgary needs some of the wingers they drafted or prospects acquired to develop and make the jump this year or next. Especially given the trading of futures recently.

Fun fact: Versteeg produced better than all of Byron, Granlund, and Baertschi last year. There's a "net positive"
