It doesn't say crap about our depth. Several important players were exempt because we're a young team exiting a rebuild.

It's not bizarre at all. Vegas just didn't like anyone who was exposed on the Flames so they decided to pick Engelland and sign him and not take a player. Vegas could have waited and signed him as a UFA but then would have been forced to pick a Flame which is clearly something they didn't want to do.

Good deal for Vegas. Surprised Engelland would take that before July 1

Actually, it does.

You can pretend it doesn't but when most of the team's bottom forwards were available and some prospects as well and Vegas decided they'd rather take no one, that does tell you a little about our depth.

I would've taken Engelland back at that price. Nice deal for Vegas. Although, they're gonna have a lot of 5-6 defensemen...

Flames have to add some kinda depth goon now. Even if only to be a 14th skater and ready for oilers games or they are gonna get beat down this year.

Absolute warrior for the Flames. No nonsense, seemingly likeable, knew his weaknesses and as dependable as could be and added the toughness at the backstage Flames didn't have and don't have again.

Him taking on those two Canucks in Game 2 was epic and top 3 moments that playoffs for me.

Dont think I'd ever seen him smile, but grinning ear to ear to play fort the home town team. Good for him.

Almost certainly the Flames will be giving some thing up. But now isn't the time to announce that with a home town resident on the team.

Engelland is not "no one". It's probably a huge deal for Vegas to have a few players that genuinely want to be there, and Engelland definitely fits that. He's also a decent bottom pair defenceman that's probably the toughest guy still in the NHL.

Flames will now overreact and sign this years version of Grossman to improve "truculence"

They didn't take no one. They took an NHL defensemen named Engelland. Arguably the most valuable player we exposed.

Why would they want our overpaid depth forwards? All of our best assets were protected. We didn't have any stupid NMC we had to protect. Important assets like Gillies, Parsons, Jankowski, Tkachuk, Andersson, Kylington all exempt. Those are part of our depth. So no, the expansion draft doesn't really tell you a ton about our depth at all.

I'm convinced this is why we heard rumblings earlier from Treliving that the Flames were looking to bring Engelland back. By planting those seeds early, Treliving Jedi mind tricked Vegas to opt to sign the hometown Engelland instead of potentially walking away with another player and Engelland but risk having Calgary re - sign Engelland instead.
