Red. White. Yellow.
Figure it out Ken you donkey.
The introduction of black to the Flames jersey may have made sense from a. Marketing perspective once upon a time when seemingly spawned by LA Raiders jackets made popular by Ice Cube and NWA and perhaps a conclusion that black was an intimidating colour to slap on even if it had nothing to do with your colour scheme.
To the point of becoming such a phenomenon that it gave rise to the term BFBS - "black for black's sake" which is defined as a reference to teams that gratuitously add black to their uniform design even though black was never one of their team colours.
It really bothers me that this organization was a sheep in this movement to begin with and that it continues to double down on this lame idea years later.
The only black thing associated with fire is an extinguished one...

Totally agree with you. The Flaming C is really all we have. It takes some serious skill to have one of the ugliest jerseys in the league in spite of a top 5 logo.

I'm not a fan of the current jersey's piping or flags (though I've never been against the use of black). But I'm just wondering what people expected when King himself said they wouldn't be much different.

I don't buy the "waiting for the 40th anniversary" argument. That's a great time for a commemorative patch. Or maybe a fancy third jersey.
The perfect time to redesign your jerseys is when there is a league mandate to redesign your jerseys.
I didn't have a lot of faith in this organization's ability to get this right, but this failed to clear the bar that I set very, very low.

The Flames are getting torn to shreds on twitter and Facebook. This almost reminds me of the #### storm the buffaslug created.

I am surprised at the level of emotional investment many fans harbour with regards to a team's uniform. It's a jersey. It is not my favourite jersey, but it honestly doesn't really register in the realm of things that should or do cause me any level of angst.

Yeah, why would people emotionally invest in the primary uniform their team plays in every night?!

People find it ugly. They've stared at it for 10 years. There was hope the design would change. Personally I'm not on the edge of a cliff over this, but its disappointing.

If the Flames checked their financials, and saw that they weren't selling many jerseys, they likely would have brought in a new versions. My guess is they sold many throughout the 2016-17 season, that they want to go at least a season or two with the same format.
The owners and executives have been in a business a long time. I would guess they wouldn't just pick these jerseys to piss you off. They likely did focus groups, did surveys, etc. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean there aren't many more people who do like it. It's the same in any election. My preferred candidate might not win, because other people have a differing point of view. Many of your points in your lengthy email likely were looked at prior to the final jersey design. In no way does it make sense they release their every thought. CP is a passionate fan base, but it doesn't represent all Calgary Flames fans.
|
I keep hearing this, but there's one big problem with this logic: fans want to support their team.
I'm going to emblazon #19 on the back of whatever monstrosity they release tomorrow, and I'm sure 95% of this board will eventually own one as well. It doesn't mean I'm too jacked about it. At 50% off, I considered getting a third jersey I dislike. It's a part of the history, whether I like it or not.
And if this board, Twitter, Facebook and real-life is any measure there is definitely much much more love for the classic white C than anything else they have released since. If they're doing focus groups, it'd be interesting to see how they're conducted. Who's in these groups? What options are they showing them?
I have a hard time believing that a well designed white C flames jersey is getting worse reviews than the black C featuring the Alberta flag. It just doesn't make sense.
But to say that you see a lot of them is more of a testament to how loyal this fanbase is than how great the jersey is. You better believe that if they released a primary jersey that we've been suggesting there will be plenty of those as well.
And checking their financials is about all this ownership group has been doing.
"Those jerseys still selling?"
"Yup, this fanbase is still buying them!"
"Great, let's not waste any time on that then. How are we coming with having them fund our new arena?"

In fairness to King, he did basically warn us all that this was coming. He did everything he could to lower people's expectations.
I have no basis for this opinion, but I just get the feeling that the flag shoulder patches are a non-negotiable command from 'on high.'
Someone wants them there regardless of how badly we dont. Its just a feeling.

The only option now is for fans to revolt, buy only retros and fill the entire dome with them while the team plays in this junk.

Agreed. Keeping the poor design around for 10 years, and 'refreshing' that design only because they have to smacks very much of that.
Someone in a big chair loves the things, and he sure as hell doesn't care what we think about it.

All Ken King does is lower expectations. Are there five examples during his entire tenure where KK overdelivered? Are there three?

No Designer with half a brain throws a bright blue patch onto a red jersey unless the guy paying them says they have to.

After 10 years, I still don't understand why we even have both flags on our jersey in the first place... we aren't even the only team in Alberta - let alone Canada.
Okay Flames, everyone gets it by now... we all know Calgary exists and where it's located. It's like a someone travelling overseas - and the whole time they are wearing Canada branded hats, t-shirts, pants, and socks. It's as if they were terrified that someone wouldn't be able to figure out that they are from Canada by just looking at them.
I have enough jerseys already. I'm not buying any more until the Retro Adidas is made our primary, or at least they design something truly new.

Double-edged sword.
"No one else is doing it."
Does that make it stupid, classy or unique? Thats a matter of opinion and I dont think mine or yours.

Nothing says 5/7 most popular team nationally and 2/2 provincially than our national and provincial flags as shoulder patches!
