It might be a good trade.
But is it a good goalie?
Goalies are different than other players. We can have a good trade for a 4th line player, but he gets sheltered. Goalies are alone and exposed.
To be a good move overall, the savings from a good trade here need to be used to help the team more than the cost of acquiring a 'better' goaltender (who that might be seems to be quite debatable)

Agree with this, there were lot's of other options.

This would still be awesome. Imagine having a 20-23 year old Goalie steal the starting job.

Not a huge Smith fan but I actually like the trade.

If he is as bad as some of you think it's not a 2nd...If it is it means he played well

That would be awesome! That would be worth the second rounder all by itself!

Me too. I voted for him in the poll. I have a very, very good feeling about this move.

What I like about Smith is that he's a competitor and a battler. Since Kipper, the only other guy I've seen that in is Ramo. I expect he'll be a leader in the room too. I think this signals that the organization has faith in our prospect goalies and Treliving knows Smith well enough to see he has the character and experience to mentor our young goalies.
It will take a while to see how it turns out.

As a UFA, Johnson could return to Calgary as a 1a to Smith.

And? The 2009 Flames were the best team Sutter ever assembled. They were undone by injuries and cap mismanagement that cost them a division title and gave them a first round matchup against the ascendant Blackhawks instead of a St Louis team starting Chris Mason.
Only one of this team's best players is older than 26. We don't need a random 2nd rounder in 2018. We need a goalie.

Hickey wasn't going to sign. Not really an improvement over Elliot with Smith and he is 35 and two more years left on his contract. Didn't give up much and not receiving much back.
If anyone is honest I don't recall Anyone in CP or in the Media saying prior to 2016 you know whi will fix the goalie situation for the Flames Mike Smith. Just saying this is a meh trade.

Does it still look good if this season repeats itself and the Flames make the playoffs in spite of their goaltending and get summarily bounced in the first round because Smith can't stop a beach ball?
Because that's a very real possibility as well.

Then you have two goalies under contract for under $6M, and a veteran, reliable backup to ensure your hotshot rookie doesn't get overwhelmed.

This team made the playoffs with league average goaltending two of the last three years
