Or you could just throw him up there with 13 and 23 but I think Bennett deserves some quality linemates for a change. Adding Neal really makes the lineup look a lot scarier.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Bennett-Neal
???-Backlund-Frolik
Stajan-Jankowski-Lazar

Couldn't agree more. That line could potentially bring a lot to the table offensively with their complementary styles and physicality. Tkachuk and Neal both push play in the right direction consistently as well, and would give Bennett a solid boost.
I wouldn't mind seeing
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Bennett-Neal
Jankowski-Backlund-Frolik
Versteeg-Lazar-Chiasson
Stajan
Break Janko in on the wing similar to Bennett/Tkachuk. Fourth line becomes a proving ground for rookies and a bit of a specialist/energy line, similar to CLB's strategy this past season.
In all likelihood, there's probably only a small possibility of a Neal trade to Calgary happening, but this would be a really tough lineup to match up against.

I agree with breaking-in Jankowski on the wing for now. Top 9 minutes anywhere is better than making him play 4th line minutes between Brouwer and Bouma.

Finally landing a 30 goal sniper type RW and not pairing him with Monahan and Gaudreau would be pretty silly.
If that trade somehow happened I'm sure he'd get a long look at first line RW with those two.

Ferly as 1st line RW means we're in for a world of hurt. I've seen about 4 posts in a row with him there. Biggest need for upgrade IMO.

Yeah why is Neal on the 3rd line? That's just weird.

Report that the Kings will buyout Matt Greene.
Will free up $1.6 mil cap space this season but the buyout will use up $833k in cap space next season.

IMO he has earned a shot at it, but they need to bring in a good RW to keep him honest. Any 1RW they bring in should be on the second line if Ferly out works him in camp though.
That's a win win, you get insurance or develop a 1RW from the system.

I really don't get the hate for Ferland that some have on this site. Some view him as some 4th line plug who is only there to protect Gaudreau, when in reality, he is arguably the 3rd most purely skilled winger on the team next to Gaudreau and Tkachuk. Ferland's problem isn't skill, his problem is consistency. He needs to develop consistency and put it all together. His skill set and potential is immense and its not just a few posters who see it, the Flames management sees it the same way (go listen to Treliving's interview from last week).

I agree if Neal was acquired he'd get a look on the 1st line with Johnny/Mony
However, I see the merit in spreading it around, especially if Ferland's chemistry with the top line carried over. It would give the Flames 3 very solid lines, making them hard to match up with and it would also give Bennett better wingers to work with as he tries to develop his offensive game.

That line, including two seasons ago AND playoffs, away from Engelland (because let's face it, no one is scoring with Engelland on the ice) has:
320:43 TOI 5v5
3.37 Goals/hour 5v5 (10.23 SH%)
2.43 Goals Against/hour 5v5 (91.72 SV%)
55.1% CF% 5v5
That is a bonafide first line in every sense except for on-ice SV% which I think goalies have more control over than forwards.
For some comparision from the 2014-15 season when they were unstoppable:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler sans Engelland:
434:30 TOI 5v5
2.90 Goals/hour (11.11 SH%) 5v5
2.35 Goals against/hour (93.03 SV%) 5v5
46.6 CF% 5v5

Maybe Alzner IS a good penalty killer, but then so is Kris Russell. Why wouldn't you just bring Russell back while killing the other bird of the divisional-rival Oilers losing their best penalty killer? Because Alzner fits your imaginary aesthetic better?
Beyond that, sure, Alzner is a "good" player who:
1) gets kicked in on shots directed towards his goaltender (6.07 more shot attempts directed at Holtby/Grubauer per hour with Alzner on the ice than the rest of his team)
2) doesn't contribute offensively (13 points last season - less than Deryk Engelland)
3) turned John Carlson from a career possession monster to a guy who spends all his time defending, and whose team generally generates 8.56 less shot attempts for themselves when he is on the ice...
Alzner would be a nice #6 for a team on a vet min deal. Bringing him in to be anything more and you are knowingly handicapping your roster. If there is one player the Capitals can afford to lose and somehow come out better for it, it's him (well, Brooks Orpik too).

Karl Alzner doesn't make sense for financial reasons, he's a solid defenseman though.

Ferland and had 9 goals in the last 2.5 months of the season (when he joined the top line). Equates to 26 goals over 82 games. That deserves a shot riding shotgun with Mony and Johnny.

When did I say anything about bringing Alzner to Calgary?
I would love to see him here, but the fact is Calgary wont be able to afford what he is likely to get paid unless he takes a steep discount. Thats what NHL GM's think about the guy regardless of what the grossly over rated fancy stats say.
Again...he plays more minutes than most, every single game, every single year, under multiple coaches and GM's...but you know better.
Ok then.

Now where have I heard all this before.
Oh yeah. I'll keep my "grossly over rated fancy stats" over what NHL GMs think.

The term defensive defenseman, as it relates to 5 on 5 play, means one thing.
They are constantly hemmed in their own zone- playing defense in the defensive zone, getting outshot, outchanced and outscored
