I have not said I am against a deal for him and you can take a risk but the risk you are suggesting is questionable.
As mentioned adding Ovie could very well cost the Flames multiple current core pieces. Does adding Ovie mean the Flames are all in right away? Would it then make more sense to keep Backlund this year to go for it and likely lose him for nothing next summer?
I understand why people are excited based off that article (even though it is pure speculation). I agree it is a risk and risks sometimes need to be taken. I am just not sure this would be the right risk? The window opens and closes faster with this deal

It more likely prevents us from spending big money on bad UFA contracts or 3rd/4th liners. Calgary spent over 15M on Wideman, Stajan, Brouwer, and Bouma this season. We are also just assuming all these core players are gonna be really good...jury is certainly still out on a few players

I don't think anyone here questions his regular season performances. But until he shows he can play through tight checking smothering defence - he's not worth the cap hit. Plus, his personality doesn't sell tickets.

He is almost a point per game in his playoff career and certainly does sell tickets don't be ridiculous
Mr. Playoffs Troy Brouwer has 32 playoff points in over 100 playoff games...Ovi has 90 in 97 including 46 goals

0.93 playoff points per game isn't good enough for you?
And he certainly sells tickets.
But he isn't a good Canadian boy right?

Ovechkin is going to the Olympics. If they want to try and stop him, it won't matter.
He'll go. The Russians will make sure he's eligible. The iihf will not honor any NHL suspension, and then he'll go play in the KHL when he's done.

Yes, it certainly seems like Ovechkin will go to the Olympics, regardless.
And the result of that would be suspension. And, as you say, quite possibly him finishing his career in the KHL.
And for the risk that this presents, I would not want to trade for him (though otherwise, that trade proposal was a huge win for the Flames)

Well, you made it sound like he was going to get to go with his leave of absence and come right on back like it was no big deal, and that a bunch of other players would follow right along as if there would be no consequences.
I guess we will see, but if he does that he's basically throwing away nearly $40 million dollars and by the sounds of it the KHL is pretty darn sketchy these days money wise.

Half the game is played without the puck. Ovechkin has no interest, and makes no effort, at that part of the game. In these playoffs alone the Caps lost multiple games when OV's man was open for the winning goal.
It has nothing to do with being Russian. OV simply isn't interested in playing the type of game that Cup winners play.

Indeed they may - but I said usually not always - so that's fine.
There is a certain hunger and desire needed to play your guts out in a 2 month playoff tourney with lots of physical play - and euro-Russians too often just don't seem to have the desire. Sergie Makarov showed me that more than 25 years ago - it hasn't changed.

If we didn't have Tkachuk I'd be all over that. But Ovie is a LW. And we have a 1-2 punch down the left.

He can play right wing...give him left on the power play
Anyone who wouldn't trade Brouwer, Fox, and a 1st for Ovi is absolutely INSANE
The hockey world would be in absolute shock over the terrible deal the Caps made...we will be lucky to give Brouwer away in two weeks

I'm not joking... I would trade our second- and third-round picks next year to get rid of Brouwer. That contract is legendarily awful.

Agreed. However knowing the Flames' luck, Fox would proceed to be the highest scoring NHL defenseman since Bobby Orr and we still somehow lose the trade.

Well, that is a legendarily awful idea. Even worse than the Brouwer contract itself.

Would you trade a second and a third for a legit top-six winger who makes $4.5 million a year? Yes. Trading that allows you to free up that space and get a good guy for free in FA
