Remember that signing Elliott comes at the cost of a 3rd round draft pick being sent to the Blues. That could be somewhat prohibitive if other options exist.

I wouldn't take him back if he played for league minimum on a 1 year contract. As a fan, I'm in it to watch the team win games. Not to look at my capologist spreadsheet and being satisfied seeing extra room in the cap space cell. Last time I checked, cap space doesn't win games. Player performance does. It was a worthwhile gamble getting Elliott given his low acquisition cost and low cap hit. And he did play a good role in getting the team to the playoffs. But I will be extremely disappointed if he's back in training camp.
|
Ditto. Theres no confidence left in him, we might as well try and get Hiller back if we want to run with Elliott.

Flames could bring back Elliott and win the presidents trophy...nobody would care or have confidence until the playoffs....just a bad idea IMO

I am not so low on Elliott as some here. It wouldn't be ideal, but they could bring him back on a short term deal at relatively low dollars, if the other deals are too rich.
Having said that, there may be lots of movement on the goalie front. LV could draft 3 or 4 guys and look to make a deal. Could go the Talbot route and pick up a back up with potential. Could land MAF. Could sign Miller. The market isn't dry because Bishop is unlikely to sign here.

Bringing back Elliott to me is signing Kari Ramo all over again when Treliving struck on in goalies in the summer of 2015 and we know how that mess ended up.

Isn't it a 4th rounder?

That's probably true. Treliving will try to upgrade, I am sure. But if it doesn't work out, what then? In 2015, he didn't think Hiller or Ortio could handle it. He was right. Ramo was the best of a bad lot.

Rights to Ben Bishop to the Stars for a 4th round pick

No, going with that option would be nonsense. A tandem with 1.3 NHL games played between them? I don't see anyway that could end up with positive results in regards to development or winning.

This morning I believe I heard Boomer say that the 3rd rd pick was conditional on us trading Elliott's rights away, not re-signing him.
That was the first time I heard this - did anyone else catch that??

While I'm not crazy about bringing Elliott back, which shouldn't presume that Treliving (or any GM) is making big decisions based on who the media and fans have confidence in. The players, maybe, but even then we cannot be sure in any way that they have no confidence in him. We can say "How would we feel in that situation?" but none of us have been in that situation, so you'd never really know.

Prosportstransactions has it as conditional on Elliott re-signing, don't know which is true but they are usually pretty accurate.

I've played enough sports to know when a team gives up on someone, and this team has has no faith in Elliott. As soon as he lets in that bad goal, they just stop playing. The effort, the body language, the intensity, everything changes. There's no rebound from them when it happens. Normally when a goalie gives up a bad goal from time to time, the team in front of him will go through a wall to get it back for him. This team just quits in Elliott. You can maybe say that is an issue with the team, but this is a team built with a bunch of guys that just two years ago could never be counted out of game.

The coach pulled him 5 minutes in after 1 goal in the most important game of the year. That's probably all we really need to know about where he stands, but never say never. Like I said previously (maybe in this thread?,) they might take him back if he isn't looking for much of a raise or has no other suitors. Then they can spend what they would have put towards a guy like Bishop on a top 6 forward.

Blues GM says the Blues will get a 3rd round pick from the Flames if they re-sign Elliott or if Elliott is traded within a year:

If Elliott is willing to sign for $2.5-$3M per season then I believe the market for him is going to be pretty big. Winnipeg certainly is an option but at that price a lot of teams will be kicking tires.

Wonder if it's signed before July 1st or signed period. That's a big variable too. Let him go to UFA status and then look at him on Canada Day without the 3rd round pick being involved.
