Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
CGY, as it was last summer, was in on trade talks to get Ben Bishop's rights before LA ultimately dealt him to DAL.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
It's believed Bishop's preference was to be dealt to DAL. BTW, Bishop played junior hockey in Texas.

I am happy he got traded to the Stars. Someone his age with a long term contract with big dollars and his injury history? We dodged a bullet.

Would rather snag a young goalie or trade for Mike Smith/MAF/Howard. Worried about Bishop turning into Hiller 2.0.
The Flames realistically need a goalie only for 2-3 seasons anyway until Gillies/Parsons are ready to take over the net.
|
Ummm Hiller was never even close to a Bishop 1.0 so I don't believe Bishop would ever be a Hiller 2.0

Entirely untrue imo.
why would Ken King have to give approval on a trade anyhow? Do you believe Tre or Burke in particular, would work in such a scenario?

something else haha

Of course Bishop was willing to waive his NTC to come to Calgary, as long as the contract AAV started with an 8.

So Bishop preferred Dallas to Calgary anyways. No real shock there. Bummer, but when the player prefers to go to one of the other possible destinations it is what it is.
...stings a lil bit.

MAF/Murray just got much much much cheaper.
As I see it, the list of teams that are even slightly interested are: Detroit, Arizona, Philadelphia, Colorado, Vancouver, Islanders, Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Winnipeg, and Florida. A good bulk of those are listed only because it's possible they'd let their starter got to Vegas for an upgrade on MAF/Murray. Basically, at this point they're at least on the phone.
Realistically, it's Vancouver and Winnipeg right?

Bishop was my top choice and Dallas was always going to be our biggest competition to get him. If Dalls gets a deal done (I assume they will) then things are really lining up for a Pitt-Cgy deal for Fleury or maybe Murray

Apparently, King had the last word prior to Tre's new contract, according to this reporter's twitter:
It's a pretty interesting thread.

If they sign Bishop for $6 million and buy out Niemi they will have 13.4 million against their cap for goalies next year.
If they sign Bishop for $6 million and buy out Lehtonen they will have 13.1 million against the cap for goalies next year.
####ing idiots.

Winnipeg likely wants to protect Hellybuck. Honestly that team has Elliott written all over it. Vancouver may be okay losing Markstrom but they are admittedly in a rebuild so trading for a 32 year old goalie makes no sense. It is really lining up for Calgary to get a deal done for a penguin goalie

The Flames are spending 9 million for a 5th line of forwards next year unless Vegas bails Tre out
At least Bishop isn't hot garbage like a lot of the dead weight on the Flames

I thought what they were saying on the Fan the other day about Vegas potentially controlling the goaltender market this offseason was pretty interesting.
Essentially, there's speculation that Vegas could take up to 7 goaltenders in the expansion draft, keep one or two for themselves, and then trade the rest away for better assets than what was available on the expansion lists.
Like they could potentially pick Lack, Grubauer, Howard, Niemi, Varlamov, Fleuy and Dubnyk (for example) and then decide to keep Grubauer and trade the rest for a cheap backup and draft picks or whatever they can get.

No surprise with this news. We are not a welcome or forgiving destination for NHL goalies in recent seasons. Anyone with options is almost certain to choose a destination over Calgary.

Friedman says the Bishop deal to Calgary last summer was killed by Flames ownership:

“And you’ll remember last year Ben Bishop thought he was going to Calgary. He thought he had a six-year deal worth somewhere between $36-39 million and that deal was killed by Calgary ownership at the end of the day.

Agreed. But I have to say, if he ####s this up and ends up with another year of bad/mediocre goaltending, I'm going to be super pissed off.
