Anyway, whether its correct or not, it's fair to say we don't know exactly what the Flames are yet. Very young team, unproven but deserving of their playoff spot.

I can't wait to see what they can show once the real season starts. I don't really care who they play but a first round BofA matchup would be incredible.
Vs San Jose W 3-2
@ Edmonton L 2-1 (SO)
Vs Nashville L 4-3
Vs Edmonton L 7-3
@ Toronto L 4-0
@ Montreal L 5-1
@ Ottawa W 3-2 (OT)
Vs Minnesota W 5-1
@ New York Rangers L 4-3
@ Pittsburgh W 3-2 (SO)
@ Nashville W (OT)
Vs Montreal W 5-1
Vs Pittsburgh W 4-2 (SO)
Vs Boston L 5-2
@ Washington L 4-2
@ Nashville L 3-1
@ St Louis W 3-2 (OT)

So that's 8-8-1 in 17 games, with only 3 wins in regulation

By contrast, the Oilers are 10-10-2 in 22 games with 7 regulation victories against playoff teams

You forgot the Carolina and Tampa games.

That doesn't seem like much of a contrast.

Technically not playoff teams so he's not wrong to not include them

They're not playoff teams. You have to pick a line. You could add them if you said against playoff teams and teams within 3 points.

However, when we played them neither team was within 3 points

Poor word choice. "By comparison" would've been more appropriate

Indeed. I was merely wishing to point out to some who are pretty excited about this obscurity that it looks fairly meaningless. I actually thought you were being sardonic

Well that stat tells me this: there are playoff bound teams, and then there are teams that play the Flames and end up getting their playoff dreams crushed.

Point of fact #1
Flames have most wins in the pacific division
Point of fact #2
Wins are the only thing that matters in the playoffs

Can't wait to see Gio smash Brown again. I'll bet he gets him twice tonight.

@SNstats
Sean Monahan looks to become the first #Flames player with 3+ points in 3 straight home games since Al MacInnis in 1992-93.

Totally different scenario. It's not the last game of the season. Iginla still has some gas left in him and could maybe find a team next year on a cheap deal, and he hasn't ruled anything out yet.

Linden was finished and everyone and their dog knew it. The Canucks had been eliminated and it was the last game of the season. It was also a mean nothing game for the Flames who had already clinched as well and couldn't move up or down in the standings. There really wasn't any emotion in the game.

Flames and Iginla still have to play some more after tonight. Flames will be jockeying for position in the standings for the next ten days. Add the whole Tkachuk/Doughty thing on top of this and the game has some meaning.

I do not expect the Flames to do anything and won't hold it against them if nothing is done.

Flames did a tribute when he returned with Boston, and it was fitting. They can do another tribute when he retires.

I'm one of the most vocal Iggy fans around here, and even I think there shouldn't be a tribute tonight of any kind. He's likely back for another year anyway.

An Oiler fan tweeted back the stat about the Flames lack of regulation wins vs playoff teams. which Derek is responding to.

Another way of looking at that is that since the same Montreal trainride turnaround, the Flames have only lost to 4 playoff teams, 2 of which the Flames started THEIR backup.

Why do you think its fairly meaningless? It has nothing to do with the Oilers.

So Flames record against playoff teams since December, without including the gimmick play, is 3W, 8L and 5 ties. Against the best teams. That seems about what you'd expect from a 7 or 8 seed I guess. Nothing to be ashamed of, but also shows they will need to step up their game to advance in the playoffs.

Flames rose through the standings partly because they beat the teams they should beat, and were exceptional in OT and shootout. We shouldn't be defensive about that. That's not luck.

So the oilers have actually gone to more OT/so games they just can't finish off a playoff team when it gets to the hard minutes. Can't wait to see these bums crumble in the playoffs.

Also 7 of those 18 loses were before that Nov 15th win against Minny. Almost half of our losses to the playoff teams on the season were in that initial 16 games where the team was stumbling around trying to figure out the system.

I should add their record would be 15-11-1 since taking the training wheels off.
