The commissioner also offered his thoughts on the Oilers, who are enjoying a strong season and are in the hunt for a Western Conference playoff spot.
"It's a bit of fun to see the team perform better than it has in the last few years in the first year in its new home," he said. "Maybe some people would say there is a connection between the two."

Reading between the lines...if you can bilk citizens out of money for a shiny new arena, the league will do your team favours?

[QUOTE=JerryUnderscore;6169843]I hear this narrative a lot, but when was the last time an elite talent decided to play for their hometown team upon becoming a UFA? Stamkos was probably the closest that I can think of, but he still decided to re-sign in Tampa.
nm, already answered.

by extrapolation then, using simple logic, that means that there haven't been any great oilers in the salary cap era because there are none that have remained. This despite all of those high draft picks... so McDavid then is the potential outlier? what are the odds on that?
Here is more definitive logic: e=ng.

Speaking of Tom, Pens have tons of injuries and not a sniff of playing in the NHL this year. Haha

I definitely wouldn't put Sutter or Parise in the elite category.
Crosby
Ovi
Stamkos
Toews
Kane
Kopitar
Bergeron (maybe)
Quick
Lundqvist
Subban
Doughty
I'm sure more could go on this list, but these are guys I would say are elite. These guys certainly don't ever make it to free agency, let alone decide to head to another city as soon as they kind.
However, as we saw with Subban and Weber this summer, trades can happen. Edmonton traded Gretzky and Hall, so who knows maybe they'll trade McDavid too.

All of those guys played for teams that either won Stanley Cups or were top contenders. If they had played for a perennial loser, they may not decide to stay put.

honestly I would rather the Oilers sign him to a 12M/8 year deal than lose him
and I think that is how it will play out...

What the NHL giveth the HLPA taketh away.
McDavid will be under pressure from his comrades to set the bar as high as possible.
I'm sure Gary would prefer 8-10 years of McD in EDM before moving to TO, NYR or LAK. But I don't see his charm being sufficient to make that happen.

I could see $12.0 on a four or five year deal, but will be surprised if McDavid exchanges UFA years for anything less than $13.0 m.

$12M would already be the highest cap hit in the league and would take up 15.74% of Edmonton's cap (assuming the cap is at $76M). Do you really think he could go up to $13M? That feels really high.

When Crosby signed his latest deal ($8.7M AAV x 12yrs), it was worth 14.50% of the cap ($60M). It was signed under the old CBA though, and so they were able to go beyond 8yrs and back-dive the final 3yrs massively to bring down the AAV ($12M per in 1st 3 years of the contract, and $3M per in last 3 years).
If we cut off years 9-12 of Crosby's deal to make it compliant with today's CBA, we're left with an 8yr contract @ $10.8M AAV, 18% of the salary cap at the time of signing.
What will the 2018/19 cap be? $78M? So an 8yr deal @ $14M AAV for McDavid?
Seems unrealistic... but certainly his agent will press for an amount in that neighbourhood, and the McDavid camp holds all of the leverage.

Not quite. Crosby signed his extension on 7 July 2007, a full year prior to when it was activated for the 2007–08 season. The salary cap for the 2007–08 season was $50.3 m, so Crosby's deal actually accounted for 17.3% of the cap at the time it was signed.
17% of next year's salary cap is likely to be around $13 m.
