I'll give it a shot. Would I take these Oilers over Stone?
Sekera - nope, but they are pretty different players to me. The Flames have other defensemen that play his role that I prefer.
Russell - nope
Larsson - maybe... he's younger and they are about the same size. Stone has put up a little bit more offence. Neither has much playoff experience. Larsson's career +/- is quite a bit better. I'd consider Larsson for sure. Larsson is also a very physical player with 3 hits per game over Stone's average of 2 (that being said, hits are not a stat that I view as very reliable from building to building).
Klefbom - not sure what to make of Klefbom. He's having a solid year offensively with 11 goals. I do wonder if his goal scoring is sustainable since his previous high was 4 last year (in 30 games) and 2 on any team before that. He doesn't hit much despite being the same size as Stone and Larsson, but he's looked pretty good when I've watched. Going forward I would probably take Klefbom but for the remainder of the season, given the D on Calgary already, I would keep Stone. His chemistry with Brodie is a factor too.
Nurse - just for this season? definitely not. Going forward, I'm not sure. I can't quite get a read on Nurse, but so far I haven't liked him that much. He has the draft pedigree and he's got the frame and the skating to be a top pairing D. If there were an off-season 1 for 1 trade possibility I would probably risk it on the basis of upside.

Just finished watching the game!
So happy for the group with everyone chipping in. Mony/Johnny weren't going tonight, but the 3M line was fantastic (just like most nights) and Elliot was in the zone again.
Props to Wideman for showing up, doing his job and slotting in seamlessly.
Romanuk is the worst homer and the Jets are a cheap slashing garbage team.

So the Oilers have 6 Giordanos and 5 Stones? What a deep defense!

The only one I'd take over him is Larsson. I like his game, having watched a decent amount of him now. Smart defensive player and uses the body effectively. Part of why it's not the fire drill in their zone that it used to be.
I'd take the Flames' top 4 101/100 times though.
Also Stone just slots so well with Brodie. Allows him to play his game, and that in itself is really important for the team.

Oh yes, I'm aware.
But we never get Hughson on our games any more so that seems like a thing of the past. The guys that have come in his stead have been awful.

In a heartbeat without thinking twice.
If the Oilers still have Hall instead of Larsson, they aren't sniffing the playoffs.

VERY late to this party, so apologies for repeating other people's thoughts:
1) Flames were lucky to not be down early in this game. Really poor puck management for the first half of the 1st period, and to start the 2nd period as well. Elliott made some big saves to keep his team in it early on. Thankfully they got it together later on and shut down the Jets attack, but it was pretty shakey early on.
2) Excellent special teams tonight, which is especially important since this is the one area that had not been great of late.
3) My god, that Bennett fight. I get a little concerned about player health when guys are throwing it like that without worrying about defense. Someone needs to teach that kid how to protect himself if he's going to keep fighting.
4) F U Romanuk. What a dick move to say shutout multiple times in the last few minutes of a game. I'm not that superstitious, but it's just bad form for the broadcaster to do that. The guy is such a hack.
5) Backlund is easily this team's MVP this year. I love what he brings to every aspect of the game. It's kind of laughable that Brouwer has an A over him.
6) Wideman playing 3rd pairing protected minutes was ok tonight. I still can't wait for Stone to be back in the lineup.
* And to be honest, I would easily take both Larsson and Klefbom over Stone. I would think about Sekera, but I'm not sure I would take him over Stone, and Nurse is a guy that will probably be better than Stone long term, but not right now. No to Russell, even though he's doing well this year. I like Stone a lot but let's not pretend he's anything more than a #4 d-man.
Damn it feels good to be ahead of the Oilers finally. Long time coming.

Pretty homerific last page and a half.
Anyone with half a brain would take Klefbom or Larsson over Stone 7 days a week. The other 3? Not so much.

Not sure what your friend's point was. Ask him to rank the defensemen from 1 to 6 and then compare the appropriate Flame against them.
Whoever he chooses as #1 (Klefbom?) < Giordano
Whoever he chooses as #2 (Larson?) < Hamilton
Whoever he chooses as #3 (Sekera?) < Brodie
Whoever he chooses as #4 (Russell?) < Stone
And their 5/6/7 isn't as good as Engelland/Bartkowski/Wideman either
That is the relevant point.

So true. Hall's ego really was holding that team back. He reminds me a lot of Phaneuf in that he badly wants to be the guy but just doesn't have the personality or intangibles to be a leader.

Yeah, the fact that the argument is comparing the Flames #4 to the Oilers top pairing guys really says it all.
