Was just musing the Flames resurgence thread on HF and the inner fear from Oil fans is pretty hilarious. I also find it even funnier that one Oil poster was complaining how we have a Edmonton is no good thread on CP. So self conscious Oil fans are that they muse other teams forums, expecting what? That fan base is so funny.

The Oilers are ahead of us in the standings solely because they racked up a ton of OT/SO Losses.
Better to, you know, win in OT/SO than the pad their stats with the Loser Point.

Also, they have one more regulation win than us. That a hilarious statement to make

Re: Armstrong and Ryan Whitney mocking Ryan Smyth
I agree it's a little classless, but maybe we need to consider the motivation behind this drive by. Today's sports TV world is basically now dominated by talking heads manufacturing controversy. There's countless former NHLers with a lot of time on their hands that would kill for an opportunity to work intermissions on Sportsnet. There's pressure on their part to create the 'viral' moment that might lead them to say / do things that they normally wouldn't do.

Damn, always have to give it up to Oilers fans for refreshing my memory. They keep really good track of everything the Flames have done this season. Cool to know they've kept a running tally of this winning stretch.
Thing is, I would consider this entire 12-2-1 stretch part of their resurgence. One loss was coming off the break, and the other was a very strong game vs the Rangers. And those wins included Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Florida and Nashville were also red hot going into those games. And LA definitely did not "lay down" for the Flames in that game, even if they've been slouches since.
I also don't understand how a team that gets to play the Flames' sloppy seconds a night later a lot lately can make a dig on the level of competition the Flames have faced.

Yeah their record in regulation is still better than ours so they have earned their higher spot for the time being.

That "debacle of monumental proportions" and the "Goala" song are the gifts that keep on giving.

Odd that they couldn't find the "Edmonton is so great" thread that we had on here, but it was deemed as a work of fiction especially because no one could post anything factual for the last decade.
The thread therefore sank to the bottom of the last page of the board and was deleted to make space for something way more useful, the great "pube eating controversy" of 2009.
This thread is the 4th iteration of the truest of the true, most factual of factual, and one of the most popular threads on the board. 431,000 views and growing (and 4th iteration) can't be wrong!

Because it's the stat that they have in their favour (other than loser points). They can't stand that the Flames have more wins overall.

Yeah....that thread had to be retired due to 'lack of reality.'

There are a handful of Oiler fans on that site that have done a good job of trumpeting a narrative that paints the Flames in a horrible light and some of the lemmings there have chugged it down.
It is funny how 65 games has turned a fanbase from pathetic self deprecating losers after a decade of sucking to chest bumping arrogant punks. I guess they have waited so long to be relevant in March they cannot contain themselves.
The Flames hot streak is really annoying them though and you can tell. I just hope if the Flames pass them in the standings and if we meet in the playoffs we are victorious.
As a side note I am not betting that Spector will write a retraction article if the Flames top the Oilers in the standings. He wrote in January how Edmonton has blown past Calgary in the rebuild and I am sure he was as gitty as a school girl when he posted it

Well, they took a decade and four #1 picks.

The article that Vinny is referencing...
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/o...attle-alberta/
and here's some of the juicier nuggets:
The Oilers moved nine points ahead of the Flames in the standings and will not be caught by their rivals this season. In the bigger picture, Edmonton is where Calgary was supposed to be by now, well on their way to being a top-10 National Hockey League team with an long and bright future.
and
Calgary’s a wild card team at best now, while the Oilers are well in contention for the Pacific Division lead.
It’s a big change in Alberta, and it won’t be changing back soon.

That's not a tie breaker for determining the standings, though.

True. It just takes out the gimmicks of 3 on 3 and the shootout which aren't around for the playoffs. I should have worded my comment differently as you're right, it's not relevant to how NHL calculates the standings.
I do think it's a meaningful indicator. Flames have nearly caught the Oilers in this category after being well behind.
