To be fair, his sticking it to Shoenfeld actually came the following season if I'm reading that correctly.

Friedman thinks there is a market for Wideman:http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/boomer-m...arket-wideman/

thinks the Wideman effect could be an issue but there is always market for veteran D
also thinks it depends on how much salary the Flames are willing to retain and what the Flames would want in return
end of the day teams like depth especially if they think they have a chance to win it

I think Florida would be a good fit. Tons of cap space and a power play that isn't great. He could be a good fit for them as he would be a very cheap pick up for a team that might not want to pay top dollar for a rental player

If the Flames are willing to retain some salary, I think there could definitely be a market, especially as the gun gets closer to the trade deadline.

No fan of Wideman here, but is there a team in the league that needs Defense depth more than the Flames?
If trading Wideman requires retaining salary and extracting very little return, is there really a point? Right now, we have a guy who was on an AHL contract two weeks ago playing regular minutes on bottom pairing and that is with everyone healthy.

Think how much money they would save on flights since they are already in Florida. Easily now able to retain @ 50% and they can throw in a Greyhound ticket.

We would still have Jokipakka as depth on the left side and the potential to move Brodie to the right side if an injury happens. Plus I guess Wotherspoon and Kulak have enough NHL experience to be considered legitimate depth at this point

You always need defensive depth going into the playoffs. But from #4 down, they have:

Stone
Engelland
Bartkowski
Jokipakka
Kulak
Wotherspoon

9 guys with NHL experience. Should be more than enough for this year.

Are we sure the Flames aren't the target, if one exists, and not specifically Wideman? It was the Flames who challenged the 20 games. I'd suggest it's reasonable to assume the jersey is the target, if any exists.

Yeah, little doubt Jokiipakka, Kulak and Wotherspoon can all be as ineffective as Wideman. Playoff teams need depth but the ones looking at the long post season runs are the teams that'll need to go eight players deep on defence, not the Flames.

So are you suggesting Wideman is better than the players mentioned? Or that other teams don't have similar or better depth players to draw from?

I'm not the person who was asked, but I would point out that (for example) Pittsburgh has four defencemen on IR right now, which means they've already drawn on all their NHL-ready depth. So, no, not all teams have similar or better depth players available to them at the moment.
