Taking a while to get to 5000

Everyone stays put I think. Someone mentioned the PTO can last 2 weeks after which the roster is allowed to expand after the deadline.

I'd like to see how he does with Dougie.
The hero chart is pretty good, and that was without a stud like Dougie.
I'm not suggesting this is Lidstrom/White version 2.
But if Bart is a bit better than Wideman, and Dougie elevates his play, this could be a nice pickup. If not, it helps with the Exp Draft.

I guess this gives them flexibility with Jokipakka. They can either not qualify him or wait until after the expansion draft to sign him.

Yeah, it takes away all of his leverage. Before it was "You need to sign me, I will take the 10% raise". Now it's "we don't need you. If you want a job next year, you will sign a 2-way for $800k".

Treliving on 960 admits one of the reasons for Bartowski is the expansion draft.
They haven't signed him yet. Hoping to get a good look at him.
Wants some depth to keep their young players in Stockton playing at the right level.
They know who Matt is, obviously some familiarity with Glen, but our scouts have been watching him too.
Not advertising that Matt Bartkowski is going to save the Calgary Flames.

Will he play tonight? Or can you, on a PTO?

Not sure why all the criticism of this possible signing. Clearly just an expansion move and kind of funny the Flames almost got Bartkowski for Iginla.
As very interesting Jokipakka went from OMG we are going to lose this guy in the expansion draft to possibly not re-signed.

That's a Triple Dougie and I'm sorry but I'm going to have to fine you.

I don't know the full rules of in-season NHL PTOs (the only rules I can find are for AHL PTOs), but I believe he can be on a PTO for up to 2 weeks (or so), which would carry through to the trade deadline exactly two weeks from today. I believe he can't play any NHL games while on a PTO, but he can practice with the team during this time. Currently, the Flames have a full 23 man roster, so to fit Bartkowski onto the roster under a standard contract, they'd have to send someone down to Stockton. However, after the deadline, the roster limit is lifted, so he could be signed at that time without sending anyone down, even if they don't trade anyone away.
|
There's the answer right there.
This is a depth move to provide flexibility at the trade deadline (as well as the bonus flexibility for the expansion draft).
They waited until today to do this because they had no intention of sending anyone down to make room for him. He practices with the team for two weeks, and then the roster can expand after the deadline.
And right now, they don't know whether they are buyers or sellers (maybe both) nor do they know what deals may be available on either side.
But by adding him, if they are sellers, no problem. If not, they send him to Stockton (who could use the help).
Seems like pretty good asset management to me. The negativity around here these days is crazy

I think he gets that 2 way contract and plays a few games for the Flames this year. Kid can skate and would be a huge improvement over Wideman.

But he also went through a pretty decent span of games this year where he was completely adequate and perhaps even good. Even some of the biggest critics admitted it at the time (though they've forgotten now).

Big deal.
Conventional & advanced stats mean little to me if a player doesn't pass the eye test. Wideman doesn't pass the eye test anymore. At all.
Can't wait until he's no longer costing this team with his play. Didn't think that I'd reach that point with Wideman but here we are.

Have never really noticed Bartkowski, but does he provide some semblance of truculence?

1.9 hits per game over his career, so about the same amount as Engelland. Of course that doesn't mean he hits guys hard.
