Zero harm or risk in this PTO signing. Now the risk/reward comes when he is one of the 4 or 5 skaters on the ice, if and when that happens.
I tend to agree with earlier poster that this is indication Flames have little interest in re-signing Jokipakka or their pending UFA defensemen.

Wideman has been playing in the top four and IMO its unlikely he plays in the NHL after this season

I seriously doubt that.
I think you're underestimating just how much Wideman has regressed over the last 2 years. I mean, you may have a point about Bartkowski being worse than Wideman last year, but Wideman has regressed even more since that point in time.
So, you may wonder then, 'well if that's the case why are they still playing Wideman? Why don't they play someone from Stockton' The only answer I can give to that is they're trying to give the old Widedog one last kick at the can in his NHL career to prove he's got any hint of something good left to give.

And Bartkowski hasn't regressed from his crappy season with the Canucks a year ago? He was on pace for about the same stats but in Providence!
Wideman has stats right now at 50 games that are as good as or better than Barkowski's over an entire season with Vancouver. Same thing last year over 51 games. Including defensive stats.

You just know that idiot will give him more ice time than he actually deserves or can handle. Like Chiasson.
This has glue guns fingers all over it.

Bartkowski can skate better than Wideman. That alone is good enough for me.
What can Wideman still do decently at this stage? Shoot the puck? Not really. Often when he does that, he shoots it into shin pads and facilitates an offensive opportunity the other way for the opposing team.

I think this is nothing more than covering the bases in regards to meeting the exposure requirements for the expansion draft.
I wonder if this does shed light into what the Flames are planning to do with Jokipakka. I forget when the deadline to qualify RFA players is, and if it would be before or after the expansion draft. I get the feeling that the Flames likely don't have any appetite to qualify Jokipakka. IIRC he would be arbitration eligible, and would require a QO with a 10% raise.

He was actually fine in a bottom pairing role in Boston, wasn't great on the tire fire that was the Vancouver Canucks last season.
Even if he just ends up being depth in advance of the trade deadline, and a guy who fills a hole we had for our expansion draft compliance, it's a decent enough move.

Apparently he is better overall, according to his stats. Both conventional and advanced.
Wideman has his issues, especially with footspeed. And he hasn't been good for a month or so, though he gets criticized for plays that aren't really his fault, or are a combination of bad plays from several guys.
But he also went through a pretty decent span of games this year where he was completely adequate and perhaps even good. Even some of the biggest critics admitted it at the time (though they've forgotten now).

CP is going to explode when Bartkowski plays on the 3rd pairing, Wideman stays on the 2nd, and Kulak is sent down.

If signing Bartkowski means Brodie moves back to the right side, it's like the Flames just traded a mediocre 2nd pairing defenseman for an allstar!

At this point even if the mistakes are the same, I'd just rather see someone else making them.

Which is one of the two most likely outcomes outcomes (the other being Hathaway goes down and the Flames carry 8 defenders). Either way I'd bet on Wideman staying right where he is (much to my chagrin).
