People are too hard on Wideman. He's playing over his head in a number 4 role here, but as a 5 or 6 he would fair much better. Now that his contract is finally expiring I'm sure a team looking for added depth on a playoff run would give at least something for him
Wideman would be playing over his head on the third pairing as well. He may not make quite as many mistakes because he would be playing fewer minutes, but he will still be source of stress for his defence partner And whichever goalie is in net.His shots almost always are wide or hit an opposition player so it won't help the forwards either. I will give credit to Gully for finally realizing he hurts the pp. Now he has to get him off penalty killing as his skating is not good enough.

Yeah so? That's the reality of the situation. Every single bottom pairing in the league will make mistakes. That's why they are bottom pairing players. More depth for a playoff run is never a bad idea. Injuries happen
Justin Schultz got a 3rd last deadline (50% retained mind you), and Wideman is at least comparable defensively, plus he actually has some playoff experience. Schultz had 10 points in 45 games and was a -22 (worst on the grease of all teams). Wideman has 16 points in 49 games and is only -2 on a team where there are multiple players at -10 or worse.
He is still a very capable puck mover when he's not in his own end, and if he would stop trying to break everyone's shin pads he might actually be an asset in the o-zone.
I expect Wideman @50% to fetch at least a 4th, given his already high salary, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Treliving used his wizard powers and got a 2nd out of him.

No. He's not anymore. Not that Justin Schultz is that good, but rather Wideman is that bad now.
And fyp.
Also Schultz is much younger, so there's the potential factored in there. Wideman is no longer what he used to be and doesn't have time on his side.

I am long past trading Wideman. Teams have scouts and any scout worth his salt would be telling the GM to stay far away. I'm not sure if it's because he lost a step or has never recovered from that incident with the official but he probably shouldn't be on an NHL roster right now.
1) Freedom for Brodie or who ever has to be his defense partner,
2) stress relief for whichever goalie has the misfortune of playing behind him,
3) increased offence , because Brodie can play his game and have confidence that when he rushes the puck his defense partner will have the speed and hockey scense to back him up.
4) Increased play in neutral and offensive zone as whoever replaces him will have more ability and speed to get the puck out before getting trapped in the defensive zone by the opposition.

Those are all great reasons for getting rid of Wideman but why would another team trade for him if they are getting:
1) A lack of freedom for his new defensive partner
2) Increased stress for whichever goalie has the misfortune of playing behind him
3) Decreased offense because his new defensive partner can no longer play his game and will have no confidence that when he rushes the puck his defense partner will have the speed and hockey sense to back him up.
4) Decreased play in the neutral and offensive zone as whoever he replaces on his new team will have more ability and speed to get the puck out before getting trapped in the defensive zone by the opposition
It still ceases to amaze me how on one hand posters rip on Wideman as not being an NHL player yet think other teams are waiting to trade for him.
Wideman will remain a Flame for the rest of the season for two reasons: No team will want him, and the Flames have no NHL ready defensive depth.

I totally agree with you, just left out that part. I believe not one team would take him unless we gave up a prospect worth more than Wideman in return. We need to put him on waivers and send him to Stcokton.

No Movement Clause.

Can't see getting anything for him anymore. We're gonna be stuck with him till season's end. Only reason to keep playing him is to give him a gentleman's chance to play out the string of his solid NHL career.
It's honestly getting to the point where it would be better to bench him right now for the rest of the season because he's simply not good enough anymore and cannot help making at least 1 god awful mistake a game or more that winds up costing this team.
Wideman's got nothing good left to give to any NHL team.
Go with this defensive lineup for the balance of the rest of season:
