You're right, a couple of games make him a NHL top 6 forward...
Alex Chiasson is a first line winger.

They will not go past the 17th, it's only happened once iirc and that was due to the lockout.

Clearly you missed the point. If is was the foregone conclusion you seem to think it is, an NHL team wouldn't immediately inject him in their top 6. Is it unlikely? Yes, but it's not impossible like you are claiming.

Was listening to the boys on the big show talk about Stone as being an ideal Wideman substitute as a pure short term 'rental' that would cost little enough that the prospect of exposing him in expansion might be worth it to cut down on the nightly Wideman mistakes down the stretch. Given that the Blues wouldn't deal to direct competition for a spot, I think Stone might be the way to go.
I still think you could pick up a better Wideman alternative and expose Gio, with a handshake deal with Vegas not to take him, even though they probably wouldn't take his albatross contract anyway.

I believe in the Pony Power
|
Why wouldn't Vegas take Gio?
- They need to hit the contract floor
- He's a great leader
- He's still a great player, despite some of the commentary on here
- He would be great in the community
Ticks all the boxes for an expansion team.
It is moot as I see no scenario where the Flames expose Gio.

According to the NHL website:
Quote:
The Las Vegas franchise must select players with an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100% of the prior season's upper limit for the salary cap
|
So the players they draft must have an "aggregate Expansion Draft value" (presumably based on what the players AAV is, or was last if they are now free agents) of $43.8M (60% of the ceiling of $73M). The current cap floor is $54M. So Vegas can go below the floor when picking it's players in the Expansion Draft. They would need to be above the floor when opening season rosters are finalized, presumably.

Anyway, Stone is a UFA also.
I guess you'd just wait and see who they take, then hopefully you can re-sign one or both of Versteeg and Stone after expansion.

Is Drew Stafford any good? Only 12 points this year but I can't see him being worse than Brouwer.

This has to be one of the stupidest things I have read. Stafford is one dimensional and isn't providing that one dimension.

Not sure the Flames are in a spot where they can go after a rental. Stone is going to cost a 2nd+ to get. I also think he is going to cost $5M per to keep. Having said that it was rumored Treliving offered Sven for him in 2015. Also both Treliving and Maloney know him well so if they really like him then maybe they acquire him?

2016/2017 Trade Speculation and Rumors
So what would be the ideal Wideman replacement? I feel Shattenkirk is an absolute pipe dream and with the top 3 set with Gio, Dougie, Brodie all we need is a reliable 2nd pairing defenseman. Ideally, this is filled internally with Kulak, Kylington, Andersson, etc. but I don't think any of the D prospects are there yet. So who's he best guy to target?
Alzner and Kulikov are going to be high in demand, probably just as much of a pipe dream as Shattenkirk, but maybe Treliving pulls off a miracle. Oduya is getting up there in age but still has some miles. Same as Markov. Daley has seemed to be rejuvenated in Pittsburgh, and Del Zotto is an interesting semi-reclamation project. Bringing Russell back is an option but I feel he is seeking high dollars and remains undersized.
This offseason will be interesting.

Michael Stone from Arizona is another name that's getting popular. Physical 6.3" RH with a hard shot.

This seems like the most logical course of action for the Flames in regards to their defense over the course of the next twelve months:
1) Re-sign Jyrki Jokipakka to meet expansion draft requirements
2) Stand pat at the trade deadline
3) Protect Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, and Dougie Hamilton at the expansion draft
4) Sign Michael Stone, Dmitry Kulikov, and Brett Kulak to contracts after the expansion draft
5) Let Dennis Wideman, Tyler Wotherspoon, and Deryk Engelland go
6) Enter next season with the following lineup on defense:
Mark Giordano - Dougie Hamilton
T.J. Brodie - Michael Stone
Brett Kulak/Jyrki Jokipakka - Dmitry Kulikov
It's not unreasonable to expect that one of Brett Kulak and Jyrki Jokipakka will take a step next season and become a good 4/5. Right now, both of them are suitable #6 guys, with Jokipakka being the slightly better of the two. It is crucial that the Flames sign Jokipakka to meet expansion draft requirements because he is unlikely to be selected and the Flames need to expose a defenseman who meets the 40/70 requirement. Theoretically, Deryk Engelland and Dennis Wideman also meet this criterion, but Engelland is getting up there in years and probably wants a longer-term deal, and Wideman will likely not be an NHLer next season. Dmitry Kulikov is a good, younger replacement to play with one of Kulak or Jokipakka.
Of course, it's entirely possible that one of Oliver Kylington, Rasmus Andersson, or even Brandon Hickey could push for or even steal the #6 defenseman spot out of training camp. In that event, the Flames should attempt to trade one of Jokipakka and Kulak and keep the other as the seventh defenseman.
These are my thoughts. What do you think?

Why would you put Kulikov on his off-side after all that? If anything, stabilize the 3 pairings:
Giordano - Hamilton
Kulikov - Brodie
Kulak - Stone
Jokipakka

Could've sworn that Kulikov was a right shot. Fun fact! He isn't!
As long as Gulutzan is coaching this team, however, Brodie will probably play the left side. As such, you're probably going to have to play someone on their off side.

I heard Cody Franson's name getting thrown around today connected to the Flames. I'm not sure if it was just spit ballin by the afternoon guys but I also saw on Twitter.
I'm not sure why but I've always liked the idea of Cody Franson playing for the flames. He's a big guy, shoots right, has a big shot and skates well. I'd take a look if the price was right.

I'd prefer to stay away from Stone. He isn't good enough defensively and he'll probably want over 4 million.
I'd absolutely love to get Tanev, maybe Brad can go back to the well with him.

I like your additions Scorp, but I don't see Jokipakka coming back.
