Bennett definitely should've known better than to go full-on body. Sid has deceptively powerful lower-body strength, and sometimes even turns it up a few notches.

Gotta say, given Johnson's performance tonight it's hard to agree with the comments about how we need better goaltending than this.
The softie is always a bit of a back breaker but expecting goalies to be perfect outside of the unstoppable shots is what we should be expecting of the elite (Price, Lundqvist in his prime, etc)
Not excusing letting in these kinds of goals by any means but when you ask a goalie to give their team a chance to win and make timely saves, Johnson did that tonight I think.

its ONE game...one good game in his last 5 or so
Calgary hasn't had good goal tending overall this season at all and unless that changes they will have at least one new guy next season
3 of 4 games against the Oilers the goal tending was atrocious...those games are all looking pretty big right about now

Smart play especially considering the short-handed situation, and every goalie in the league would do that in the same situation.
|
Regardless the officials blew it and it should have been a goal.
NHL Helmet Rule:
“When a goalkeeper has lost his helmet and/or face mask and his team has possession of the puck, the play shall be stopped immediately to allow the goalkeeper the opportunity to regain his helmet and/or face mask. When the opposing team has possession of the puck, play shall only be stopped if there is no immediate and impending scoring opportunity. This stoppage of play must be made by the Referee. When play is stopped because the goalkeeper has lost his helmet and/or face mask, the ensuing face-off shall take place at one of the defending team’s end zone face-off spots.
When a goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet and/or face mask in order to secure a stoppage of play, the Referee shall stop play as outlined above and in this case assess the goalkeeper a minor penalty for delaying the game.”

Two things
1. "Soft" first goal - Johnson in his first game with the new form fitting pants, no? That is exactly where it went in, it is an adjustment issue
2. When Murray shook his mask off he stood up, I doubt there is a goal by Monahan if he continues the play
(Edit: based on above, even if he quits playing, as he did, but the ref didn't blow it down, it still should be a goal)
Nice result, huge save by Johnson on Crosby and great interception of the cross crease pass by Brodie

I understand a coach having loyalty to a veteran player but does anyone else have the feeling that Gulutzan is putting the future of his coaching life in the hands of Dennis Wideman?
At some point the madness must end. Put Brodie back on his strong side with a guy that can skate or put Engelland up with him on the second pairing.

I would definitely have classified literally scoring a goal as "immediate and impending"

With that the team has given itself a chance to control its destiny now down the stretch run as they've ensured they'll be within reach coming out of the break.
Kings have only 2 games in hand and the Flames are up a point. With the 4 games vs LA remaining, they have every opportunity to push them back in the standings.
Some (relatively) easy games coming up. The boys have a chance to go on a run after gutting out 6 of 8 in this stretch, that if all thing were equal could've been 8 of 8.

6 of 8 points in the last 4 is outstanding considering the competition

he would likely be in the lead by 10+ points had he not missed the start of the season. Oilers have what 1 goal in 3 games?

5 of the next 7 games are against non playoff teams
The other two are against other fringe teams. One being Philly, whom have not been good lately.
It's time to rest then mount a good run for that WC spot.
