Relax, the guy he quoted thanked his post. Jordon dishes it out but these days he can take it back, too.

Well, whatever happens, Glendale can always pull a 'Maple Leaf Gardens' and turn the Gila River Arena into a Loblaws.

@DarrenDreger: Sources say Coyotes ownership shocked by ASU's decision yesterday to pull out of arena project. Doesn't sound like there's a backup plan...

weeeeeird...
typically, with other sports, they play intra-conference, so in this case it would be in the PAC12... but there aren't any other hockey teams in the pac12... so they have to travel a lot to east conferences like the B1G to fill their schedule... also team in Colorado for example...
seems like a pretty brutal travel schedule for them...
really surprised that the AD thought collegiate hockey in Arizona would/will work?
edit: oddly enough, Arizona Wildcats also have a team.... but they also have to fill their schedule with eastern teams (i saw they actually played University of Alberta last year too)

ASU doesn't play in a conference right now, it is definitely a weird situation but they will join either the Big 10, WCHA or NCHC next season.

Came back from my son's hockey tournament in Phoenix over MLK weekend and one of their games was in a small local rink that had about 4 rows of bleachers. Lots of ASU stuff everywhere (cool unis BTW) and I asked someone if they practiced there. As it turns out they in fact played several of their home games there. I suspect capacity in the arena was about 300. Now I guess there was another rink they played some games in. But I was left wondering why they need a 15k seat arena unless they simply have money to burn. Didn't seem to make a ton of sense.

Oceanside Ice Arena has a capacity of 840. The other rink they play in is Gila River Arena. Their average attendance was over 1700 per game last season despite some of their games being played in an 840 seat arena, which considering is
So while they may not need 15k seats, they certainly need a larger facility. In addition any new arena would likely host the basketball team which plays in a facility that is 40+ years old and a capacity just over 10k. Getting a new larger facility would put them in line to host NCAA tournament basketball/hockey games and the facilities required to bid for the Final/Frozen 4.

Shocking. This deal was prematurely announced at start, without leg work having been done for financial, political and architectural plans.

not at all... The CalgaryNEXT presentation never claimed that it is an official deal. They were simply presenting an idea for the city to consider. That is it.

no, they were not just floating an idea to consider. while they didn't say there was a deal, they did let the world know "there is no plan b"
they had a dumb idea and expected everyone to fall over themselves to support it.

Not having a plan B for your proposal is not even remotely similar to presenting it like a done deal.
They were absolutely putting an idea out for consideration. That's what a proposal is. The fact that their proposal was bad is both different than what you're suggesting, and not relevant to this situation in any meaningful way.

Now with this arena deal dead, do the Coyotes try to team up with the Suns to get a building?

That seems like the only other option other than staying in Glendale or relocating the franchise.

The Arizona Coyotes are denying it, but according to the Glendale Star newspaper, representatives of the team have toured arenas in Seattle and Portland in the past three months.
“The destinations appear to have been the KeyArena in Seattle and the Moda Center in Portland, Ore,” the Star writes, citing officials in Seattle and Portland.
The report comes just days after the Coyotes’ plans to build a new arena in Tempe fell through, and though the team has publicly committed to remaining in Arizona, it won’t quell the speculation that the club could be on the move.

I'd love to see a team in Portland, although you would have to assume it would be the end of the WinterHawks.

Sooner or later a business decision to go along with a hockey decision will need to occur. Given where the min. salary cap is and the fact that you need to spend more than that to remain competitive over the long term, a long term arena solution will need to be found.
As it stands now and perhaps even with a split of revenues from a Suns/Yotes arena deal in downtown, the Coyotes need to be able to have a large enough revenue stream to actually be able to sustain a team. This charade has continued on for long enough and it isn't viable long term.
I understand a lot of the reasons why the current arrangement doesn't work for the Coyotes or the city of Glendale but sometimes the economics just aren't there.
If they can move to a facility where the fan base can easily go to games, will the team be able to attract 17 000+ a night paying a decent priced tickets? What will corporate sponsorship look like? What will the local tv rights look like when they come up for renewal? Is any of the above sustainable with a consistent cap at $65+ million? Say what you want but the teams performance needs to improve dramatically and stay strong and that entails dollars that I am not sure current ownership may want to spend.
Interesting times but we should know much more about the viability of this market REALLY quickly

So the reason the deal fell apart was ASU had to choose between getting tax money for research grants or funding the arena
http://arizonasports.com/story/10231...es-arena-deal/
Quote:
Sen. Bob Worsley, R-Mesa, told Arizona Sports last week that ASU President Michael Crow had to choose his battle with the Arizona State Legislature between building new research buildings to elevate the school’s engineering status, which could mean hundreds of millions in grant money for ASU, or build the arena.
Responding to conjecture that ASU never wanted to partner with the Coyotes, Anderson reiterated something he told Arizona Sports in November.
“Of course we were on board,” he said. “I initiated the original discussion with the Coyotes about a potential partnership so certainly we were on board but the way things evolved during the course of discussions and negotiations — things shift and shake.”
