Larsson and Brodie are different styles of defenseman so they're not the greatest comparison. But I think you do need to consider the age difference given the position that they play. The two year difference at that age can be significant.
Brodie was absolutely on fire from when him and Giordano were first paired together in January of 2014 until about half way thru last season. But in the past calendar year his play has dropped off significantly. I don't know the exact reason, but there was a point in time albeit at a much younger age where Dion Phaneuf looked destined for greatness. Today he's a guy we might consider as our #4 if someone else paid his salary and retained half of his ego.
The future is tough to predict and players aren't linear in how they develop. I'm hopeful that Brodie is just having an off year with a lot of his team mates and will bounce back. But that's no guarantee.
I don't see the Flames as being in a position to trade one of their top 3 defensemen for a forward, unless it's Giordano, and it's one hell of a forward coming back.
|
I'm of the opinion that Brodie has always been slightly overrated here but I was also convinced in 2014 that he was the team's best defenseman. Before I would even consider trading Brodie I would encourage the head coach put him back on the right side or change head coaches as sometimes it's as simple as a coach not being the right fit for the team. Certainly looks to be the case for more than a few Flames this season.

Same goes with in front of the net. He isn't going to clear the crease, but excels at tying up sticks and deflecting passes.
The advanced stats before this season consistently showed Brodie as one of the best performers in the league.

I agree he can do some things defensively. His exits are great. I'm not sure I agree that he excels at tying up sticks or deflecting passes.
Anyway, I wasn't limiting the comment to defence - his offence, while great, lacks a great shot. His wrister is behind that of Hamilton and Gio, and his slapshot behind those guys plus Wideman and maybe even Engelland.
I think he is a really good defenceman, better than Larsson overall. He's just not as great as some people were saying last year.

Wouldn't mind a claim. Would compete for the 6/7 role at least and adds a bit of toughness.
Average/below average stay at home defenceman, good passes out, skating is rough.
Immediate upgrade, but that's only because our D depth is horrible.

I could get down with that. At least to add some toughness to finish the year. Chances are we will be losing Engelland to Las Vegas.

Fowler plays in the All-Star game the same week that the "off-the-board" pick McIlrath is waived? Ouch for the Rangers...at least they salvaged a 2018 7th rounder from him.

This is a bad hockey team, anyone should be available for the right price. There are no untouchables. No Fire sales though. Get value or hold on to what you've got and keep building through the draft until you've got the mix that works.

Nope, the condition was the pick only transfered if McIlrath played 30 games for the Panthers. He only played 5.
All they have to show for him is Steve freaking Kampfer.
The Flames passed on McIlrath the last time on waivers, granted at the time they still had Grossmann on the roster.

I think you posted something before about macilrath having an uncommon contract status at the end of the year, I think something about it impacting a team with the expansion draft?

^Probably what you are referencing. Since he's only played 6 games this season, unless he goes to Colorado (who has exactly 36 games left to play, most in the league), he will be a UFA this summer.
Also, he would need to play in 29 more games to count for the defenseman exposure requirement, which he likely wouldn't get here. Redmond from yesterday's waivers would have been a good pickup for the Flames (similar to how they signed Tom McCollum to fulfill the goalie exposure requirement) since he is signed through 2018 at a low salary and only needs a few games for his eligibility. As of today, resigning Jokipakka seems like the most likely way that the Flames will fulfill this requirement, but that would require Kevin wanting to re-sign here.

Insider trading:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider-...-radar~1047202
Duchene is on Nashville's radar (although Duchene is on many team's radar)
Problem for Poile is that Nashville has just recently started showing chemistry and does he want to potentially rock the boat by making a big move
Blues and Coyotes are looking to upgrade at center
Not surprising, most sought after position heading into the deadline is defence
Lightning may trade for a defenceman whether they are in the playoff hunt or not
This is a "bigger picture" need for Yzerman
Whether that is Shattenkirk or if the Ducks decide to auction off one of their young guys, Tampa will at least inquire
Avalanche and Senators may play two regular season games in Sweden in November
NHLPA still has to sign off
Alain Vigneault's new contract pays him $4.1 million per year

Brian Hedger @BrianHedger
A source I spoke with last week expects Vegas to be very interested these "asset" deals, agreeing not to select certain players in exp draft

I wonder if the market will be better for not selecting certain players than it will be for selecting certain players. I guess it really boils down to the same thing, so probably not.

So we will be seeing a lot of this?
Flames trade 3rd rounder to Vegas for Future Considerstions
Canucks trade 5th rounder to Vegas for Future Considerations
Nashville trades 2nd rounder to Vegas for Future Considerstions

Tom Gilbert (LA) and Mark Barberio (MTL) have been placed on waivers. Dylan McIlrath (FLA) and Paul Thompson (FLA) clear.

Barberio has strong underlying numbers. His usage is minimal, but I think he would be better than any of our 4-7 defencemen.
