Depending on the Tkachuk plan I could get behind Paajarvi. I don't know if the salary would fit though.

McIlrath seems like a Burke special: Big, slow, devoid of offence, but tough as nails. That said, Grossman is slower and offers even less.
I remember McGrattan being impressed with McIlrath's showing in his first NHL fight:

I wish we hadn't been so quick to sign Grossman and use up a contract slot. You had to know there would be better options on the waiver wire throughout the year.
McIlrath might be interesting... but claiming him would involve some organizational gymnastics. I'm not sure the Flames want to start eating into LTIR this early in the season.
Put Smid on LTIR, Claim McIlrath, Waive Grossmann, Assign Grossmann to Stockton, Assign ??? to Adirondack.
Flames should pick up McIlrath,a lot of Ranger fans disappointed they put this kid on waivers.Only 24 and is a absolute beast, can skate and actually play hockey also. From what I have read on him he is supposley a fairly smart player also.Would be a Perfect 3 pairing guy RH shot also.
if the Flames claim McIlrath, then they have to move Smid to LTIR to fit him in. Kulak or Grossman down still leaves them around 200K over the cap, and Grossman would need waivers. That then severely limits their ability to make future moves.

Right, and even with Smid likely to LTIR as they are in the cap situation that it would make sense, I don't see the Flames eating into the Smid overage this early.
From my understanding of how that works, they can retroactively bank room from the time of Smid's injury and perhaps use the additional cap space for something more important later on when the season is partially over.

And to add to this - why would the Flames eat into that overage for a luxury add on the bottom pairing? Even if we operate on the idea that McIlrath adds a significant boost over Kulak, Grossman AND Engelland, if he is only a bottom pair D, he is only adding that for a small amount of time. Small gain for the disruption.
They would do this (use the LTIR) to add when forced by other injuries, or to add a more potent player to the lineup - such as a top 6 forward
I like McIlrath. I wish we were not wasting roster spots on Grossmann, Wideman, Engelland because McIlrath would be a welcome addition. More skilled, capable, and patient with the puck than Engelland, more big and physical than Wideman, and more mobile than Grossmann. He's inexperienced, but he's the ideal #6/#7 type guy with some upside to be that true Regehr type that we've never been able to find. Paired with Kulak that's a young, balanced, and likely to be successful bottom pair. Can't see us claiming him though. They seem committed to a log jam of mediocrity on the backend.

I don't get why people think this. A tougher Engelland is basically Mcilrath's ceiling.
