A lot has happened since I moved to the United States in December of 2000.
This has been the most awful and heartbreaking week I've experienced since I lived here.
As I've posted in other threads, I've had a mostly positive experience here. What has occurred over the last week at both a macro level and at a personal level has made me question everything.
It's not easy to pack up and leave when you share custody of your children with your estranged American wife, are well into your professional career you appreciate, and own a house in a neighbourhood you love.
It's also not easy for people who have all those same considerations but happen to come from a country not as white and non-muslim as Canada.
What a sad week for people living in this part of the world.

The Trump presidency will be an unmitigated disaster for the US and the world. America is getting exactly what they deserve.

More than half of the people who voted cast a vote against him. Do they deserve this?

An absolutely devastating article from ex-Bushie, and neo-conservative, Eliot Cohen.
"We were right. And friends who urged us to tone it down, to make our peace with him, to stop saying as loudly as we could “this is abnormal,” to accommodate him, to show loyalty to the Republican Party, to think that he and his advisers could be tamed, were wrong. In an epic week beginning with a dark and divisive inaugural speech, extraordinary attacks on a free press, a visit to the CIA that dishonored a monument to anonymous heroes who paid the ultimate price, and now an attempt to ban selected groups of Muslims (including interpreters who served with our forces in Iraq and those with green cards, though not those from countries with Trump hotels, or from really indispensable states like Saudi Arabia), he has lived down to expectations."
"Precisely because the problem is one of temperament and character, it will not get better. It will get worse, as power intoxicates Trump and those around him. It will probably end in calamity—substantial domestic protest and violence, a breakdown of international economic relationships, the collapse of major alliances, or perhaps one or more new wars (even with China) on top of the ones we already have. It will not be surprising in the slightest if his term ends not in four or in eight years, but sooner, with impeachment or removal under the 25th Amendment. The sooner Americans get used to these likelihoods, the better."
"He will do much more damage before he departs the scene, to become a subject of horrified wonder in our grandchildren’s history books. To repair the damage he will have done Americans must give particular care to how they educate their children, not only in love of country but in fair-mindedness; not only in democratic processes but democratic values. Americans, in their own communities, can find common ground with those whom they have been accustomed to think of as political opponents. They can attempt to renew a political culture damaged by their decayed systems of civic education, and by the cynicism of their popular culture."

Not enough people turned out of vote, period.
Sure I feel bad for everyone, even the Trump supporters. They are just ignorant and stupid, but this is a cautionary tale about not taking freedom and democracy for granted, about the trivialization of politics, about not holding media accountable, about rampant corporatism, about hubris.
Like I said, it's a disaster, but it's America's disaster and they definitely deserve it.
Democracy delivers in a measure commensurate to what is put into it.

So it turns out this isn't even close to true, because there was never a list and Obama didn't stop any visa applications.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/ampht...obama-in-2011/
First the white house said it was congress' list, then when pressed on where specifically then next day, they said it was from an Obama Executive Order temporarily suspending Visa applications.
Turns out there was neither a list nor a suspension. It was only Iraq and the was no suspension, only a short term increase in scrutiny due to two applicants being implicated in planting a bomb. The increase scrutiny lead to long delays in processing Iraqi visas.
We have to stop talking the white house's word for things. And that's scary as ###

'04 and '08 were both higher but yeah it wasn't a low turnout year, really.

His comments about this being a section in our grandchildren's textbooks echoes my daughter's comments. We were watching some of the news coverage and she turned and looked at me and said "I will be discussing this with MY grandkids, you know? This will be part of my history to teach. And I hate that, so much."

Excellent article - that's what I've always hated about politics, that blind allegiance to party, makes people lose all their common sense and sometimes their humanity.
