Oh yeah, I wasn't pitying them or anything, just that this is totally shooting themselves in the foot with a bazooka. And you just know his idiot supporters won't be able to make the connection between the 20% tax and the price of their groceries going up.

Yeah, except that Trump is probably expecting that if he slaps a 20% tarriff on Mexican goods that American firms and producers will jump in to produce those products since they can be competitive.
What he's trying to do i think is use the Tariff as a imaginary wall against the flow of cheap Mexican products into the States.

Even if that happens, the price of groceries still goes up.

So should we go with man-child, or child-man? Or just child?
Quote:
On the morning after Donald Trump’s inauguration, acting National Park Service director Michael T. Reynolds received an extraordinary summons: The new president wanted to talk to him.
In a Saturday phone call, Trump personally ordered Reynolds to produce additional photographs of the previous day’s crowds on the National Mall, according to three individuals who have knowledge of the conversation. The president believed that they might prove that the media had lied in reporting that attendance had been no better than average.
Trump also expressed anger over a retweet sent from the agency’s account, in which side-by-side photographs showed far fewer people at his swearing-in than had shown up to see Barack Obama’s inaugural in 2009.
According to one account, Reynolds had been contacted by the White House and given a phone number to call. When he dialed it, he was told to hold for the president.
For Trump, who sees himself and his achievements in superlative terms, the inauguration’s crowd size has been a source of grievance that he appears unable to put behind him. It is a measure of his fixation on the issue that he would devote part of his first morning in office to it — and that he would take out his frustrations on an acting Park Service director.
|
Quote:
The Park Service does not release crowd estimates. Experts, however, have estimated that the 2017 turnout was no more than a third the size of Obama’s eight years earlier.
Reynolds was taken aback by Trump’s request, but did secure some additional aerial photographs and forwarded them to the White House through normal channels in the Interior Department, the sources said. The photos, however, did not prove Trump’s contention that the crowd size was upwards of 1 million.

I seriously wonder if we'll see the elimination of the minimum wage under Trump.

I don't think it can be stressed enough that putting an import tax on Mexican goods is charging Americans for the wall, not Mexico. I'm torn between the idea that Trump cynically understands this but figures "tax" and "Mexico" in the same sentence is enough to fool his base, or if he even understands that increasing the money Americans pay for Mexican goods is not actually making them pay for the wall.

I'm going to go with the latter. I just read the ABC transcript and I'm completely convinced that he's mentally ill.

I know a Canadian PM needs to tread carefully. Whether we like it or not, the U.S. is a vital trade partner. I imagine Trudeau will be tight lipped as possible, but I do hope that he talks to Mexico and tries to work out some favourable trade deals for surpluses they might end up having. Of course knowing Trump, he would probably try to punish Canada if we did it.

Did the US Department of Defense make a veiled tweet about Trump?

Hi, thanks, I'm one of those Americans who gets absolutely screwed, and I did my part in voting against this garbage, as well as 65+ million other people who are all getting caught in the crossfire despite something we voted against. Don't forget that a majority of American voters did not vote for this.
That said, if someone wants to let me move into their basement sometime in the next four years, I would be eternally grateful.

Oh, so it's a symbolic wall. That should keep the price down.

I think you've got this all mixed up.
It works like this: If Americans pay more for Mexican goods, Mexico will have more money, and Mexican workers will make more money, and they'll then not only be able to pay for the wall, but nobody will want to leave the country and become illegal immigrants, which will then make make the wall itself moot.
The first self-mooting wall. The more I think about it, the smarter this wall idea becomes.

A good article was posted way before Trump's win in this thread based on that exact quote:
