At this stage in their careers, why do the players have to learn a new system? Is it so different and complicated that the players need to learn it? Or does it mean, that the players have to break old habits to play the way the coach wants them to play? Either way, they've played 51 games and better know how the coach wants them to play and be able to execute the game plan by now.

I'm guessing Doug MacLean.

You would think with a full training camp and maybe 20 games they would know the system etc. 51 games and he's talking about the system haha, show the dude the door after this season.

Ol' Glue Gun talking about players taking minute long shifts and not digging deep and not yada yada yada... Does he mention this during intermissions in front of everyone in the room to create some accountability or does he weasel out and act like an upset child during a media scrum?

His rant from the Habs post game is laughable and he has no one to blame but himself.

Well, himself and the 20 other adult professionals in the room... half of whichever have done dick-all this season.

His rant is true. Whether you like him or not, this team has had consistent bouts of being completely pathetic and its not exclusive to Gulutzan.

It's laughable that people are so reluctant to spread the blame wide enough that they start making up stories about the coach being scared to talk during the intermission. Ridiculous.

That's right. It's been ongoing for over 10 years now. I thought we were away from that during the 2014/15 season but it crept back in last year and had been quite bad over the last couple of weeks.

What I was kinda shocked at today was that we are three points out of being the third worst team in the nhl. I didn't realize we were that close to the bottom 3.

As for trying to analyse how he's treating JG while he's frustrated, that's a huge leap to suggest he's handling it wrong cause he didn't go over to him. Again, he might no better what Johnny wants or needs, and also who knows what else is going on behind close doors. Maybe he doesn't feel like he wants to go speak to Johnny if he's annoyed with him about something else, like off ice preparation or something.

Also, ripping the officials never works. Might make us fans feel better, but it serves no purpose. Especially if the Flames are already getting a raw deal from them because of Wideman gate.

My assessment was as a lazy boy coach. I am not asking for anyone to rip into the officials but its pretty black and white to me. They called a high stick and he was bleeding. If it was Tkachuks stick that hit himself in the face drawing blood then it should never have been a call in the first place but how a ref can call a high stick but not call the extra 2 for blood because it was his own players stick makes no sense.

I was under the impression that he has family in the Calgary area but don't know definitively. I believe it was mentioned during the week he was unemployed and speculation was that the Flames fired Hartley to hire Boudreau.

Don't know how to turn this around or when the team will pull out of this, but some of the blame being thrown around here is off base.

The same people who are upset with Gulutzan for not showing emotion during the game are now upset because he showed too much emotion in a press conference?

It's fine to criticize the system, the play, effort, etc, but lots of the complaints in here are just complaining for the sake of complaining.

He looks at the monitor too much? Come on

Who cares what he says in the media afterwards, he has to get the message through to his player pre/post and during game. He already stated he doesn't talk to them after the game so I'm not so sure he's up to the task at all. He doesn't have this team mentally prepared.

Blame GG sure, IMO he's not the coach to bring the best out of our players but you also have to admit that our players are playing like horses*** and if guys like Gaudreau didn't turn it over so much, and if Monahan could drive the f-ing net instead of doing some useless cut to the centre toe-curl BS, and if our D could hit the net, and if our goalies could stop a puck....we would likely have much different results.

GG may not have been the best hire but c'mon, players need to step up man.

I was going to mention this.

Besides which, we all made fun of Torts for his outbursts. Same with Roy. Same with Yeo that one time.

Someone mentioned that Glug-glug's strategy seems to be spreading talent around to have more even lines / pairings...the argument being that if you concentrate all your talent, it'll be easier for the opponent to shut down your top guys or victimize your weakest D-men. In reality, that's frigging stupid. Because everyone knows that a good line is not just the sum of its parts, but gels to become more than that.

Half the time, "good coaching" is probably just dumb luck -- trying things out and finding some lightning in a bucket and somehow managing to keep it bottled bucketed up until winning a cup. That's how I'd describe the last playoff season. The line-brawl game became more than anyone could have expected, and Hartley & Co. managed to ride that pretty far.

So what we have here is a coach who refuses to acknowledge these factors...the luck & the intangibles. Instead, everything can be broken down to a "process" and he seems to think that simply following the process will make everything right. Well that's stupid...and it has to change now.

GG has to change his philosophy or the organization needs to change him.

Seriously, if one more of you brings up the whole "he doesn't talk to players after a loss" thing, I'm going to reach through my monitor and throat punch you.

It's already been established that this is actually quite common amongst NHL coaches, and rarely does it do any good to beat up on players that are already down or pissed about a loss immediately after the event. These are pros, they don't need to be told they sucked that night. They already know it (most of the time), and need time to process what happened in that game. Leaving it until the next morning's meeting is perfectly reasonable.

It is not indicative of being able to communicate effectively with the players, nor is it a proxy for "mentally preparing" a team. Quite frankly, the players have to do most of their mental preparation themselves. The coach is responsible for communicating the game plan and things each individual needs to work on. They are not Svengali's capable of manipulating their players with mind control.

It's fine to be angry, just make sure it's something to actually be angry about.

If he has been playing "patty cake" with the players and it has not worked, then calling them out in public is just really admitting that he has already lost the room and does not know what to do.

And I agree, calling out the players in public is always bush league. That is not how you should treat people period...and that includes sports figures making million dollar salaries. Public humiliation does not serve to motivate people.

It does if the proper voice says the proper indictments of your performance.

Glen Gulutzen is not the proper voice and he was not saying the proper things.
Critiquing and humiliation do not always need to be side by side.
